Tiger Woods’s latest project faces scrutiny from the locals
Last month, Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake initiated a new project under the company Nexus Luxury Collection, which they are both shareholders of. The venture named T-Squared Social, named after the letter ‘t’ in their names, opened its first bar in New York, Manhattan.
The pro and amateur golfer had proposed an idea of opening the same establishment in the heart of St. Andrews, Scotland, converting a 1930s cinema named The New Picture House. The sports bar will be a place for comfort and fun, and will allow its patrons to engage in a variety of activities.

However, the Scottish locals are upset with the conversion of such a historic building. A St. Andrews University student has signed the petition against the project. Describing their concerns, they said, “We share a common fear for future generations who may be denied the opportunity to experience this cultural hub. It’s a part of our identity, a source of pride, and an integral element of our town’s fabric. To allow it to fade away would be a disservice to our rich heritage and the generations yet to come.”

Moreover, the founder and director of the St Andrews Film Festival, Boris Bosilkov, has called the proposal the ‘American-driven gentrification’ of Scottish identity. The petition has found 7500 supporters, indicating that a vast majority find the project threatening to Scottish culture.
Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake’s rationale behind the revamp
It should be noted that both have played at St. Andrews. Woods played last at the 150th Open Championship, while Justin played at the Alfred Dunhill Link Championship.

Tiger shared his desire for the project and said, “We all wanted to bring our T-Squared Social concept here to add to the local community and be a welcoming place for those living in St Andrews and for visitors alike.” Additionally, Justin described it as a place for comfort and quality time.
Amidst the backlash, the cinema’s managing director, Davis Morris, seems to be in favor of the sports bar. Yet, the public has taken it as disrespectful of their cultural history. The project awaits the approval from Fife Council. But until then, tell us in the comments, which side you are on?
