The golf world was left divided with the arrival of LIV Golf. While many golfers despised the Saudi-funded Tour, some of the biggest PGA Tour stars signed on the dotted line to join the lucrative Tour for a relaxed schedule and its glittering prize money. Golf’s biggest names such as Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka, to name a few, became part of the breakaway Tour for a reported nine-figure guaranteed check. Though it’s only been a year since its commencement, the Saudi-funded Tour is already making modifications to its model. One such transformation could be the team component being the sole competition in LIV Golf.

Despite moving to the Greg Norman-led Tour, many players have still aspired to play in the PGA Tour. Nonetheless, as of now, no defector has publicly denounced the lucrative Tour. But that may soon change with LIV Golf’s constant modifications. However, as per the latest reported update, the strict cause in their contracts has left the defectors with no choice but to continue their careers with the lucrative Tour.
According to Sports Illustrated, if a player wants to leave the Saudi-funded Tour for some reason, there is a penalty clause that states the golfer must pay two, three, or four times their signing bonus to break their agreement. For instance, since Phil Mickelson reportedly received $200 million to join LIV Golf, he must pay around $400-800 million as a penalty to break his contract!

With a 9-figure cheque, the defectors have to adhere to the Saudi-funded Tour’s stringent policies. Unlike the PGA Tour, where a player gets to skip some of its events based on his preference, LIV expects its players to compete in all of its 14 events for the year. If the player is tired of the stern rule and wants to terminate their contract, they have to pay the exorbitant penalty.

While it may sound shocking to some, the golf world also had the same reaction when they first heard about the extortionate LIV contracts. With the massive money offering, also come stubborn clauses. Nonetheless, most golfers are under contract with LIV until the 2025 season. With no complaints about the breakaway Tour as of now and a hefty amount to terminate the contract, there won’t be any defector leaving LIV Golf in the foreseeable future.
