Greg Norman has been doing a wonderful job trying to grow his league and eventually growing the game of golf. The golf legend has successfully lured out some of the best PGA Tour players to join his Saudi-backed league. However, some are highly against the entire LIV Golf idea. And one of these PGA Tour loyalists is Irish professional golfer Rory McIlroy. But there was a time when Norman and McIlroy were on good terms with each other. In fact, Norman once extended his support to the golf star after a disappointing performance in 1996.

Greg Norman’s worthy advice for Rory McIlroy

It was during the 1996 Masters in Augusta when Rory McIlroy took a huge fall losing to legend Nick Faldo by a five-shot difference. The golfer initially had a good six-shot lead in the final round, but it didn’t end the way he expected.

The 22-year-old golfer was saddened by the end of the tournament. But in an interaction with the media later, McIlroy revealed how Greg Norman came forward with a helpful piece of advice for him.

“I spoke with Greg during the week of the Malaysian Open and his advice was ‘don’t listen to you guys (the media),” McIlroy revealed. “Greg just sort of said to me, ‘don’t read golf magazines, don’t pick up the newspapers, don’t watch the Golf channel’.”

Have things changed between Norman and McIlroy?

Despite having a pretty good relationship with Norman in the past, McIlroy is currently the biggest rival of the “shark”. McIlroy, along with his best friend Tiger Woods, also recently suggested that Norman should quit his role as the LIV Golf CEO. However, in his response, Norman said the two golfers didn’t know what they were talking about.

Greg Norman has faced hate from all around the world for bringing LIV Golf to the golf community. However, many talented players are genuinely happy after joining the short-scheduled and highly-paying circuit. But McIlroy is definitely not one of them.
