The ongoing 2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is completely disrupted, thanks to the havoc of Storm Amy. Weather forecast organizations gave warnings of wind gusts of up to 80 mph. But despite the warnings, Johann Rupert and the DP World Tour went ahead with the tournament and are now facing the consequences.

Earlier today, the entire play on Saturday, October 4, 2025, was called off by the management due to unplayable conditions and concerns over players’ safety. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship management took it to X to share an update. According to the recent update, the play is now restricted to 54 holes instead of 72. The final round will now commence on Sunday, October 5, 2025. The play will start at 09:00 am local time across all three courses.

The change of format and schedule comes in because of the challenges brought on by Storm Amy. Initially, the game was scheduled for play from October 2 to October 5, 2025, over regular 72 holes. And it started as planned.

It all went well on the opening day. Players completed play, with Matthew Jordan, Darius van Driel, and Ryan Brehm tied at the top at the end of day 1. It was Friday when things took a U-turn. The early starters saw favorable conditions, just like on Thursday, but things became more challenging as the game progressed into the afternoon.

Eventually, the DP World Tour suspended play at 16.14 local time on Friday. The conditions didn’t allow any further play on Friday. Following the suspension, an update was shared that Round 2 will begin at 08:00 local time on Saturday. And as for Round 3, the DP World Tour opted for a shotgun start at 12:30 local time.

Round 2 went as planned, but just within a few minutes of Round 3, the weather worsened. Once again, the play was suspended across all three courses. And just like on Friday, no further play was possible. So, the management decided to move Round 3 to Sunday and shorten it to only 54 holes.

At the end of Round 2, South African golfer Richard Sterne and the local boy Robert MacIntyre are leading. They both sit at the top of the leaderboard with 12-under par. Following them closely is Richard’s countryman, Louis Oosthuizen, at 11-under par. Many other Ryder Cup and LIV Golf stars are playing in the tournament. Robert MacIntyre is joined by fellow 2025 Ryder Cup stars Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Tommy Fleetwood. Additionally, there are 16 LIV Golf players besides Tyrrell Hatton. Some of them include Dustin Johnson, Matt Jones, Brooks Koepka, Adrian Meronk, and Patrick Reed. In fact, Louis Oosthuizen is also a LIV Golf player.

It’s not the first time rain has disrupted play at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Something similar happened in 2023, but the changes were a little different that time.

Rains disrupt play at the 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Coincidentally, Saturday’s play was affected in 2023 as well. But in 2023, the DP World Tour took a different course. Instead of shrinking the game to 54 holes, they extended play to Monday. The format remained the same. Round 3 was completed on Sunday, October 8, 2023, and the last round was set for play on the Old Course at St Andrews on Monday.

Tournament Director Mikael Eriksson said: “We always have a number of contingencies in the case of adverse weather conditions, and on this occasion the decision has been made alongside the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Committee to continue the tournament into Monday.”

Back then, the management continued with the regular format. And thanks to the greens staff, the game was completed on Monday without any further delay. The Old Course St Andrews and Kingsbarns Golf were good to go, and it was down to Carnoustie Golf Links, which looked unplayable even until early Monday morning. But the greens staff somehow made it playable by the tee time, and the event was completed on schedule.

Hopefully, Round 3 at the 2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will also be completed on schedule. The weather forecast shows that the winds and rain may ease on Sunday. However, it still doesn’t look that good. The UK Met Office has given yellow weather warning for the area.
