In his book, Williams even narrates one of Woods’ major wins, which he played a vital role in, and which Woods thanked him for.

Tiger Woods acknowledges Williams’ part in his win

Soon after Woods made the final putt on the 18th hole, his first emotion was relief. The course had mentally drained the 15-time major champion, and he was more than glad that it was over. Steve said that Woods got a photo of himself holding the Wanamaker Trophy. On it, he inscribed, “Great read on 17, Stevie. Thanks for your help, Tiger.” The champion knew he owed part of the win to Williams.

The caddie was overwhelmed; he couldn’t believe that only 5 months in, him and Tiger were able to accomplish such an extraordinary feat, especially with his advice playing a significant role in winning the golf legend his second major championship.

How did Williams help Woods on the 17th hole?

After bogeys at the 12th and 16th holes and a double bogey at the 13th hole, Woods could not afford another misfire. At the 17th hole, Sergio Garcia was right on Tiger Woods’ tail, only a stroke behind due to a birdie on the 15th hole. Any mistake here, and Garcia would have leveled Woods’ score. Williams took command at the par-3 17th hole with everything on the line.

“The line is just inside the hole,” said Williams to Woods right before his third shot at the hole. Soon after he told Woods that, he began second-guessing himself. “Sh*t, what if I’m wrong here?” he wondered. But it was too late then. He held his breath as Woods played the shot. And as the ball rolled into the hole, he thanked the gods.

Woods later told the media, “Steve said ‘inside left’ and I said ‘perfect’, trusted the read and made a good stroke.” With a par at the 18th hole, Woods had managed to hold off Garcia, and he knew it was all due to Williams’ astounding advice.
