Dustin Johnson Explains Why He’ll Make a Terrific Ryder Cup Captain for Team USA

Dustin Johnson contributed to a spectacular victory for team USA at the recently concluded Ryder Cup. The five-time player of the prestigious biennial cup will be looking for his sixth appearance in 2023, Italy. However, can you imagine DJ as the captain? Well, he certainly can.

The American Team MVP had a perfect score of five and contributed to the mind-blowing 19-9 win over Team Europe. Additionally, he was the first player since 1979 to achieve this feat. At 37, he was also the oldest player on the American team. However, the world number 2 is still in his prime, and it definitely will not be shocking to have him as a captain in the next edition.

Dustin Johnson is currently in Las Vegas, making his maiden appearance at the CJ Cup. Playing for the first time since Whistling Straits, this will also be the first tournament of the new season for the 24-time-winner on the PGA Tour.

Dustin Johnson is confident he will be a good captain

Speaking in a press conference a day prior to the start, he was asked an interesting question. Someone asked, “Have you ever thought, down the road, about being a Ryder Cup captain? Or, do you think you’d be a good one?”

Johnson did not need much time to think before he said, Yeah, I would love to do it one day. I think it would be fun. I think I would be a good captain. Yeah, it’s something that I definitely would like to do at some point.”

Explaining his simple formula for when he would be a captain, he said, “I feel like I would let the guys just do their thing. I think that’s most important. The players are very good. I don’t need to tell them how to play a golf course or tell them what to do, but just put them in a situation where they can succeed.”

He further elaborated on why he feels he’d be a good pick. “I feel like I’ve got a good relationship with most of the players out here, and hopefully I’ll be out here long enough to where I’ll know the guys that are going to be on the team,” he said.
