There is no denying that the PGA Tour suffered losses when great players joined the LIV Golf league. Since then, they have made several changes in their policies and rules to match themselves to their rivals. However, their recent actions have caused havoc in the golf world. After the golf ball back rule, a new upsetting incident took place. A TV broadcast removed the names of Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson from the World Match Play winner list of 2017 and 2018. Just because they are not part of the American Tour anymore!

Did PGA Tour cross a line by omitting LIV defectors’ names?

The former NCAA golf national championships tournament director posted a snapshot of a TV broadcast. It had all the names of previous winners except the LIV defectors. The golf community on Reddit also paid heed to the actions of the American Tour and called it childish.

A fan questioned, “Is it childish for telecasts to leave the names of winners who are playing for LIV off the list when they talk about past winners? Fair enough, Covid won 2020, but what is the value in leaving Johnson and Watson of this list for their wins in 17 and 18 respectively? Not sure this gain what, especially since most winners aren’t on LIV.”

The fans reacted and said, “Erasing history is beyond lame.” Other comments like, “Yeah this is pretty cringe ngl,” “That’s all the PGA tour does. Erase history of all their tournaments like the western open,” and “That’s weird. ESPN had DJ listed this morning. Has to be a Fox thing,” proved that the golf fans were unhappy about how the PGA Tour handled the situation.

However, a user chimed in and revealed the reason why this might be happening. He said, “The PGA addressed this earlier last year. They no longer can use their names for fear of being sued.”

But overall, it was not appreciated by the fans, despite their legal fears. “That’s just silly” and “Silly gooses” are the perfect example of unsatisfied fans. Another fan chimed in and said, “I mean it’s the PGA tours marquee event. They aren’t going to advertise their competition at their event.” However, he added, “Erasing the names of past winners for the match play is silly.”Another comment followed, “Probably couldn’t get LIVs permission to use their names/images/etc.?” The fan added, “PGA don’t own them any more. I bet Phil has filed with the PGA to cease using his image/name.”

Golf fans on Twitter are also furious

The Twitter golf community was as unhappy as any other fans. It was also not on board with the golf ball back rule, and this has added more fire to it. Bryan Tweed, a Local Golf Pass Advisor in Chicago, chimed in. He said, “As much as I don’t like the LIV concept and where the money comes from, the @PGATOUR can’t erase what their champions at the time did. Get over yourselves.” Here are a few of the reactions by the golf fans:

Overall, PGA Tour’s actions were not appreciated and instead led to a backlash. Even though there was some support, but it wasn’t enough.
