Exercising makes John Daly want to “throw up,” and it’s no secret that physical activities aren’t exactly his cup of tea either. This PGA Tour veteran has a lifetime of alarming habits, starting with smoking at just 19 years old, which he did for almost 29 years, consuming around two to two and a half packs a day. His diet wasn’t exactly picture-perfect either-he’d swing by McDonald’s three to four times a day, indulging in hefty amounts of food, and wash it down with Diet Coke, his go-to drink. In fact, he used to drink anywhere from 12 to 20 Diet Cokes a day, claiming he hates water and can’t stand its taste. Due to these habits, he’s had his share of health scares, including a bladder cancer diagnosis in 2020, but still manages to live life on his own terms. And still, even after all that, his latest revelation about his recent diet has everyone’s mouth agape. Surprisingly.
In the latest post by ESPN reporter Ryan McGee, John Daly was asked by another ESPN reporter, Martin Smith, about his John Daly Seltzer consumption habits. “What is the largest quantity of those John Daly seltzers that you’ve consumed in a day?” Smith inquired. Daly thought for a moment before responding with a straight face, “I think I’ve done 55, 60 of these.” Smith was taken aback, and his response was a simple, “In a day?”
Daly seemed to dodge the question, instead highlighting the seltzer’s benefits. “Yeah, we’re non-carbonated. We know there’s no additive sugar; we’re gluten-free,” he said. When Smith pressed on, asking again about his daily consumption, Daly quipped, “Yeah, it’s only 4.5 percent alcohol in them. Yeah, it’s not carbonated; it’s basically water.” McGee couldn’t help but chuckle, adding, “Yeah, you gotta hydrate. It’s basically water, John.” Smith was left speechless, unsure how to respond to Daly’s tongue-in-cheek answers.

Well, if you know Daly, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the golfer has been known for his infamous diet choices and outrageous lifestyle. The two-time major champion has always been open about his drinking habits, and his latest claim of downing 55 to 60 seltzers a day doesn’t seem out of character. Daly endorses Good Boy, a seltzer brand that produces low-calorie, natural-flavored drinks with only 4.5% ABV. These seltzers come in various flavors like Cranberry & Pineapple, Tropical Strawberry Hibiscus, Summer Watermelon, and Peach & Mango.

Daly’s partnership with Good Boy extends beyond seltzers, as they also offer a line of John Daly Cocktails, including iced tea and lemonade flavors with zero sugar, zero carbs, and only 95 calories. This isn’t the first time Daly has showcased his drinking prowess; in 2022, he claimed to be able to drink up to 40 beers in a day and still continue with whiskey. But there is one golfer who contradicts Daly’s diet choice and does it very starkly.

Bernhard Langer and John Daly are polar-opposites in diet choices
Bernhard Langer and John Daly – two golfers, one sport, and vastly different lifestyles. Langer, 67, is a poster child for fitness and healthy living, while Daly, 58, is a rebel with a penchant for cigarettes, Diet Coke, and Peanut M&M’s. Daly’s 2008 practice round diet consisted of 21 cigarettes, 12 Diet Cokes, and 6 packs of Peanut M&M’s-with zero water intake. He jokingly claims, “I’d probably outlast a camel when it comes to drinking water; I can’t stand water.” Meanwhile, Langer attributes his longevity to his strict regimen, saying, “I exercise and stretch every day… I drink a little bit, but very, very little… I don’t smoke [at all].”

John Daly's 60 seltzers a day—legendary or reckless? What's your take on his lifestyle?
Have an interesting take?
Despite their differing approaches, both golfers have racked up impressive wins. Langer has 47 senior tour events and 12 senior major titles under his belt, while Daly has secured 21 professional wins, including the 1995 Open Championship and the 1991 PGA Championship. Daly praises Tiger Woods, saying, “What he has done for the game of golf is amazing.” However, he warns that intense workouts may be detrimental to golfers’ longevity, stating, “Hardcore working out is gonna hurt these guys and they won’t be playing when they’re 55, 60.” Will Daly’s unorthodox approach prove to be a winning formula for aging golfers, or will Langer’s dedication to fitness set the standard for longevity in the sport?
