A golfer needs to put in an immense amount of hard work to be able to come out on top at a tournament. However, sometimes they need a bit more to be able to exhibit their best on the greens. This was the case with Brooks Koepka as well, surprisingly. In an exclusive interview for EssentiallySports with Noah Lack, the LIV Golf star’s coach Pete Cowen spoke about the extra step that pushed him for his first major win.

Koepka was able to clinch his first victory in the majors at the 2017 U.S. Open. And the legendary coach had a whole lot to do with regard to the same. The Englishman, a little while back, divulged the secret behind the 33-year-old’s win—nothing short of a good old “bollocking!”

Explaining what helped the 9X PGA Tour champ clinch his first U.S. Open title in 2017, Cowen, in the EssentiallySports Exclusive, recalled how he gave a “proper bollock” to the professional in a bid to get him back on his feet. The pro-turned-trainer mentioned how the golfer’s attitude was “appalling” at the 2017 FedEx St. Jude Classic that took place the previous week.

After a disappointing four rounds at the tournament, where he finished T37 with a score of 279 (-1), Koepka’s coach asked him and his caddy, Ricky Elliot, to meet him on the range for a small talk. The trainer “sat them down by the short game area” on the greens, following which he berated the duo just like a “school teacher” all the while pointing his finger at them, recounted the instructor during the ES Exclusive.

The legend said, “With the attitude you had last week, you will win nothing,” as he dubbed his performance at the Classic as “pathetic” and “embarrassing.” Adding on to his roasting, Pete Cowen in the EssentiallySports FanCast looked back on how he told Koepka, “You need to challenge,” while asking him if he’d rather “have the attitude of a champion or continue being the petulant child” he was the past week. The Englishman then went ahead and challenged the professional to “go out and win the tournament.”

The rest is history, as Koepka did go on to claim the win at the major with a score of 16-under 272. And the golfer does give enough credit to his trainer, as he was given a flag from Erin Hills with the words, “Thanks for the bollocking; I couldn’t have done it without that.” That gesture doesn’t come as a surprise since he was able to win multiple majors after joining hands with the coach in 2013.

Following his first win at Erin Hills in 2017, the golfer has been able to top the leaderboard at a total of four other majors. He managed to defend his title at the 2018 U.S. Open and won the PGA Championship, scoring 16-under, 264.

The professional managed to defend the latter victory in 2019, and four years later he raked in his third PGA Championship win earlier this year, scoring 271 (-9). Well, one can surely imagine how much of an effect the berating has seen over the years with the number of wins he was able to garner. A genius move, no doubt!
