When Angel Cabrera said, “Golf is everything to me. It’s my life. I have to continue.” Few believed it would be possible for him to do so after the past he had. Back in 2023, the athlete was released on parole after spending more than 30 months in prison for domestic violence. Fast forward to May 2024, and he might just be able to make his words a reality, all thanks to a recent announcement.

A tweet was shared by NUCLR GOLF on its X handle (formerly Twitter), mentioning how the golfer is all ready to make a comeback to the sport. It also divulged his plans to move to America in a bid to play more events on the senior men’s circuit, courtesy of his longtime friend Charlie Epps.

Is Angel Cabrera making a comeback?

Back in December, under strict conditions, Cabrera’s suspension from playing in the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions events was lifted by the golfing body. Thus, he was allowed to participate in tournaments as long as his ‘procedural situation’ did not worsen. The decision gave Cabrera a chance to climb the ranks in the OWGR once again. Now, Epps has come forward to reveal how the Argentina pro was granted a visa to the United States of America last week to make his return to the sport.

The 54-year-old’s longtime coach also disclosed how he has plans to move permanently to Houston, Texas, to play more regularly on the PGA Tour Champions. Cabrera’s visa had apparently expired back in January, due to which the American embassy had made him undergo a series of psychological tests in Buenos Aires in order to reinstate the same.

“That was the delay,” added Epps while alluding to how the expiration of the visa and the tests to get another one was the reason behind Cabrera not attending the Masters tournament back in April. The golfer, as the winner of the tournament at Augusta National in 2009, was eligible to play at the event as a past champion.

The Argentinian athlete, however, has not been idle while waiting for his visa to make a comeback into the sport via the senior men’s circuit. After being reinstated on the Tours, Angel Cabrera had taken part in several events, some of which he made the cut while being unable to do so in others.

Cabrera’s attempts to rise on the OWGR

After he was allowed to play, the professional took part in the Trophy Hassan II, a Champions Tour event in Morocco, back in February while finishing T27. Cabrera was also part of the field at a Korn Ferry-sanctioned event, the Argentine Open, in March, as well as in a tournament in Barbados as part of the Legends Tour. He missed the cut in the former while placing T11 in the latter.

Cabrera, meanwhile, is reportedly part of the alternate list for the 2024 American Family Insurance Championship and the Dick’s Open, both of which are set to kick off in June. His entry into the field, however, depends on how it is filled, since being a major championship winner makes him qualified for both unrestricted and restricted sponsor exemptions. It appears the golfer is truly set on making a comeback to the sport. One can only hope he is able to do so while changing his life for the better!
