Tiger Woods‘s involvement in the Ryder Cup has been both impactful and complex. Over his career, Woods has participated in eight Ryder Cups, contributing to one U.S. victory, and the GOAT always ends up in team captainship conversations, just as the Ryder Cup sets in everyone’s minds. An actual former U.S. Ryder Cup captain, however, has added a zing to that conversation.

Paul Azinger, in a candid conversation on Trey Wingo’s podcast for the Ryder Cup Preview, stirred the golf world. Wingo asked Azinger, “Do you think he’ll (Woods) ever be a Ryder Cup captain?” And the 2008 Ryder Cup winning captain replied: ” I don’t know. I think he’d more likely to be the commissioner before maybe than a Ryder Cup captain. That’s interesting, right? Like that’s the old thing with quarterbacks. What do you want to be? You want to broadcast the games, or you want to own a team, and I think some of those guys would rather own the team than talk about what’s going on on the field, and it feels like that’s sort of the way he’s built, too.”
Tiger Woods’s individual record: 13 wins, 21 losses, and 3 draws, has often been a topic of discussion. Despite this, his presence has undeniably been a catalyst for increased viewership and heightened interest in the event. Woods’s competitive spirit and leadership qualities have made him a central figure in Team USA’s Ryder Cup campaigns.

Then Azinger further added, “Tiger’s bigger than Ryder Cup captains. See, I said a couple years back he should be the permanent captain, you know, all-time captain because, who better? But that’s not right. You know, other guys deserve to be captain, and so I kind of take that back. But I think he has bigger fish to fry. Tiger’s, you know, he’s involved with this game monetarily now, and maybe he’ll end up running it.”

Moreover, Woods himself has never shown any enthusiasm to be captain for the Ryder Cup team. Even, in 2024, Woods declined the opportunity to captain the U.S. team for the 2025 Ryder Cup. Citing his extensive commitments, including his role on the PGA Tour’s policy board and ongoing negotiations with LIV Golf’s Saudi backers, Woods stated, “My time has been so loaded with the tour and everything… I’m on so many different subcommittees that it just takes so much time in the day.” This decision underscored the evolving nature of Woods’s involvement in the sport, shifting from on-course competition to off-course influence.

Tiger Woods’s evolution from a golf icon to global recognition
Tiger Woods has long been synonymous with golf excellence. With 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour wins, his on-course achievements have cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest. However, in recent years, Woods has transitioned from being a dominant force on the fairways to a pivotal figure shaping the future of professional golf.
In August 2025, Woods was appointed chairman of the PGA Tour’s newly formed Future Competition Committee. This nine-member panel, assembled by new CEO Brian Rolapp, is tasked with reimagining the Tour’s competitive framework. Rolapp emphasized the committee’s mission to pursue ‘significant change’ rather than incremental adjustments, aiming to optimize the game for players, fans, and partners. Woods, along with fellow players Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy, and Keith Mitchell, will collaborate with industry executives to redefine the Tour’s structure.
This appointment follows Woods’s role as vice chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises, a for-profit entity established in 2024 to oversee the Tour’s commercial operations. In this capacity, Woods has been instrumental in enhancing fan engagement, developing new media strategies, and securing sponsorships. His involvement in these areas underscores his commitment to ensuring the Tour’s growth and sustainability in a rapidly evolving sports landscape. Beyond his administrative roles, Woods has been a driving force behind the creation of TGL (TMRW Golf League), a technology-infused golf league launched in collaboration with Rory McIlroy and sports executive Mike McCarley. The league combines traditional golf play with elements of simulated indoor golf, aiming to attract a younger audience and provide a fresh viewing experience.
The inaugural season of TGL began in January 2025, marking a significant step in Woods’ vision to modernize the sport. Woods’ influence extends to his mentorship of current players. Keegan Bradley, the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, has sought Woods’ advice throughout his tenure, highlighting Woods’ ongoing role as a guiding figure within the golfing community. In summary, Tiger Woods’s journey from a legendary golfer to a transformative figure in the sport’s governance exemplifies his enduring impact. Through his leadership roles, innovative initiatives, and mentorship, Woods continues to shape the future of golf, ensuring its evolution for generations to come.
