While the skills are the most prominent set one should have, at times golf becomes a game of luck too. And who could know it better than Wyndham Clark? The 30-year-old was on his way to tie THE PLAYERS Championship with Scottie Scheffler and battle for the victory in the playoffs. However, fate had something else planned, and Clark missed his putt on the 17th hole as his ball lipped out to give Scheffler his 8th victory on the PGA Tour.

But the Denver native is not alone in experiencing the crushing lip-out; there are many pros who were once in the place of Clark as well. From Phil Mickelson to Bryson DeChambeau. Here are the three most crashing lip-outs in the golf world.

Phil Mickelson, 2016: The Open Championship

Lefty has had many lip-out moments in his career. The most famous was the missed shot at the 2013 WM Phoenix Open to finish with the lowest round of 59. However, he went on to win that event, getting redemption. But three years later, at the 2016 British Open, Mickelson had another heartbreaking moment. At Royal Troon playing the first round, Mickelson had a chance to card the lowest round of 62 done in any major. But at the par-4 18th, Lefty’s ball looked like it made it in, turned, and bounced off the lips of the hole.

Mickelson settled with a round of 63 and was so crushed that he missed out on a historical moment that he wanted to shed a tear after finishing the round. The missed putt would’ve stung more as the 6-time major winner finished runner-up at the 145th Open.

Bryson DeChambeau, 2021 BMW Championship

A year before Bryson DeChambeau moved to LIV Golf, he had a chance to add the 9th title on the PGA Tour. However, things didn’t turn out exactly how he hoped. DeChambeau was in an intense playoff battle against Patrick Cantlay at the 2021 BMW Championship. It went to be a brutal 6-hole playoff that could’ve been shortened if DeChambeau shot the second par-4 18th or third par-3 17th playoff hole. Unfortunately, both times, his ball touched the lip of the hole without turning in.

The playoff was eventually won by Cantlay after DeChambeau missed the last putt as well. The loss was crushing for the Scientist, as he had plenty of chances to close the playoff.

Brandt Snedeker – 2009 BMW Championship

In 2009, Brandt Snedeker was assured that he could not miss that year’s TOUR Championship by any chance. Even if he bogeyed the putt, he would make it to the next big event. However, as Snedeker took a shot at the 15-foot putt, he missed. But there was a bogey that would secure his spot at the TOUR Championship. Sadly, the three-foot putt touched the lip and went left, drowning Snedeker’s chances of making it to the season-ending event.

He eventually made a triple-bogey on the par-4 10th hole. Nonetheless, Snedeker’s season ended before he wanted to and later he regretted that he didn’t concentrate on the bogey putt enough to push it in.
