Missing the cut at a major event is always a bad look, and the heartbreak becomes even worse when it’s part of a concerning trend. Justin Thomas’s recent performance in major tournaments has been disappointing, with a string of missed cuts, including his third consecutive U.S. Open. After struggling in the first round with a 6-over 76 and a frustrating four-putt double bogey on Friday, Thomas finished at 12 over par after 36 holes, sealing his fate. This latest miss adds to his concerning stats: in 10 U.S. Open appearances, he has now missed the cut in five of them, and in his last 13 major starts, Thomas has recorded only one top-25 finish and seven missed cuts.
After he missed the cut with a terrible score, one would’ve expected him to hide away, but no, the golfer is taking the high road, or should we say, the driving range at Oakmont! Instead of wallowing in disappointment, Thomas is grinding on the range, using the extra time to hone his skills and pick himself up. And let’s be real, there are worse places to hang out for the weekend than Oakmont’s practice range — the views aren’t bad either!
Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, whom Thomas jokingly referenced pre-tournament, is having a relatively better time at the U.S. Open, as he is currently tied for T23 with a score of 4 under par, despite not playing spectacularly. With a positive attitude and a focus on improvement, JT is turning a tough day into a valuable learning experience.

Perhaps this setback will ignite a fire under Thomas, propelling him to his next big victory. Even if not, it’s likely he’ll rebound stronger than ever if he heeds his own words of wisdom.
Justin Thomas can use his own advice after missing the cut at Oakmont

What’s your perspective on:
Is Justin Thomas's positive attitude after missing the cut a sign of a true champion?
Have an interesting take?
Thomas highlights golf’s unique ability to bring people together, saying, “It’s great because we live in a world nowadays where it’s so easy to be a recluse and just sit inside and be on your phone, be on your computer, watching all these shows, whatever it may be.” This perspective is especially valuable in today’s world, where it’s easy to get caught up in screens and solo activities.
Thomas’s advice is a great reminder that golf is about more than just competition – it’s about community, outdoor activity, and personal growth. As he noted, golf is becoming more accessible to people from all walks of life, making it an exciting time to get involved in the sport. With its many benefits and opportunities, golf can be a rewarding pursuit for young players. “It’s such a cool, unique sport. I’m obviously biased, but the people that you’re able to meet, and places you’re able to go, it’s hard to really compare anything to it.” Can Thomas’s own experiences at Oakmont inspire him to take his own advice and bounce back stronger than ever?
