With the sheer dominance of the Europeans, it seemed like everything was working in their favor. But after the first session, on Saturday, the disappointing news of Viktor Hovland’s injury has left Luke Donald’s team in a dilemma. Though for the four-balls, his place was switched with Tyrrell Hatton, but for the singles, he will be a crucial piece to complete the victory puzzle. However, Hovland has shared an update on his injury, hinting at the possibility of participating on Sunday.

The golfer in an interview shared, “I’m going to get some treatment this afternoon and tonight, and hopefully I will be back ok for the singles tomorrow.” Initially, when Hovland withdrew, it was shared that it was a precautionary step due to his neck injury. The statement raised worries for fans, as this is not the first time Hovland has struggled with a neck injury.

Sharing about the injury, Hovland said, “But I came in and rested up and got some more treatment, and when I went back out onto the range, I tried hitting some shots trying to build up to the driver. I hit three or four hard ones, and it just got worse. I didn’t want to risk it for the match in case it got worse and I couldn’t continue, especially in fourballs when you are hitting every shot.”
Considering his worsening condition, his place was switched with Hatton as he participated with Matt Fitzpatrick. If Hovland is not well enough to play on Sunday, the envelope rule may come into play.

Hovland’s step might be a great one, as he will be a crucial part of the team, given his Ryder Cup record.

The golfer debuted at Whistling Straits in 2021, losing three team matches and recording a tie in the four-ball second session. But fortunately, he kept his record loss-free in singles. Playing against Collin Morikawa, the golfer achieved a tie. But interestingly, Morikawa and Hovland faced each other in 2023.

Being the home team at Rome, Hovland showcased dominance with two wins, one tie, and one loss in the team matches. However, with his single performance, he achieved his first victory by a 4 & 3 margin.
With zero loss and excellent form, it will be crucial for the team to have Viktor Hovland playing. If the golfer plans to withdraw, his match will be halved as per the envelope rule.
