Rory McIlroy is often seen as the savior of PGAT. The golfer has played on the tour for decades, and more than just being a player, McIlroy has also served as a board member, so his relationship with the PGAT associates and the tour itself is pretty close-knit. In a recent series of events, NUCLR GOLF on X quoted American author Alan Shipnuck’s book “LIV and Let Die” and stated that in the text, an anonymous former Ryder Cup teammate accuses McIlroy of being deceitful and driven by financial interests. The tweet added that the teammate claimed that McIlroy is not the hero portrayed by some but is instead motivated by a desire to preserve his revenue streams.

The tweet created much-expected havoc. Now, the author himself has replied to the tweet and added that it is “worth noting” that he tried reconfirming the claim and asked “McIlroy’s manager Sean O’Flaherty to fact-check that passage,” but the only response he got was: “Has the Ryder Cup teammate been drinking?”

The writer added that the same dialogue is mentioned in the book as well. Not just that though, a lot more about the 24x PGAT winner is talked about in the book—quote courtesy to the anonymous former Ryder Cup teammate. 

McIlroy’s backdoor negotiations and a dent in the ‘savior’ façade 

As a golf fan and follower, it isn’t uncommon knowledge that Rory McIlroy’s relationship with PIF-backed LIV Golf hasn’t been the best.
