The last leg of the PGA Tour, the FedEx Cup playoffs, is ready to kick off on August 10 at TPC Southwind in Memphis. Even though the event marks the onset of the final stage of the PGA Tour, its relevance has somewhat been overshadowed this week thanks to the recent announcement about changes to the Tour’s 2024 schedule. And ahead of the $20 million event, as the news continues to create buzz, Rory McIlroy is also caught in the center of it.

It has been a decade since the North Irishman won a major title; however, this season has been a good one for Rory. As he heads to what is one of the last events on the Tour, instead of talking about his form and game, his interview focused on the 2024 season. And while opening up about it, McIlroy has revealed the one place that he is undoubtedly not excited about on the 2024 schedule: Hawaii!

Rory McIlroy is not fond of one of the PGA Tour’s destination

The FedEx Cup playoffs will see 70 players compete for the title in Memphis. However, as of now, everybody is still focused on how the changes to the PGA Tour format for next year will affect players.

In his interview ahead of the FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship, Rory McIlroy was also among those who answered a few questions about the changing format. During which he revealed that he is not excited to go to The Aloha State. “I’m not a huge Hawaii guy, so I’ll probably not go to Hawaii,” he stated.

As per his comments, it seems unlikely that the Irishman will play in the first two events of the 2024 calendar year, i.e., the Sentry Tournament and the Sony Open, since they’re the ones that will be held in Hawaii.

Aside from that, the 4-time major winner seems rather pleased with the format. “I’d say my schedule will look pretty much the same as it did this year,” he stated, talking about how his 2023 year on the PGA Tour only began in February. “I’ll play Pebble Beach and sort of play a similar schedule from there on that I’ve played.”

Even though McIlroy’s schedule may look a lot like how he’s played this year, that is far from how the Tour format looks. This year has seen huge change, especially with the likes of no-cut events.

A glimpse into the 2024 PGA Tour format

As per the earlier PGA Tour announcement, the hefty purse events, also called the elevated events, will be rebranded as ‘Signature Events.’ Of these 12 events, eight will not witness the traditional cut after 36 holes. The four events that will follow the regular format and see half the field head home early will be the Players Championship, Genesis Invitational, Memorial Tournament, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The 2024 season will begin in early January at The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii, where McIlroy will almost certainly be a no-show. And run up to the Wyndham Championship in early August. Before the Tour’s highlight, the FedEx Cup playoffs kick in. The playoffs will again see 70 players.

2024 on the PGA Tour will also see a hike in the purse for the FedEx Cup winner to $25 Million. Details about the final stage of the Tour, a.k.a. the 2024 FedEx Cup portion, are still to be released; however, seeing how the Tour has not failed to thrill, it will undoubtedly have a twist.
