As spring blooms in Pennsylvania, the PGA TOUR is teeing up one of its most anticipated events of the year—the 2025 Truist Championship. Scheduled for May 8–11, this $51 million Signature Event with a whopping $20 million purse marks a fresh chapter in the tournament’s history. Formerly the Wells Fargo Championship, the tournament has shifted away from its longtime home at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The reason? Quail Hollow is preparing to host the PGA Championship later this month.

In its place, the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course will challenge the PGA TOUR’s elite. The A.W. Tillinghast-designed par-70 layout measures 7,119 yards and is no cakewalk—small Bentgrass greens, 118 bunkers (the most on Tour this season), and gnarly fescue roughs set the tone. And with water in play on six holes, even the top-tier field, which includes Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Ludvig Åberg, will need to stay sharp. This year also introduces a bold new era of branding. After Wells Fargo ended its sponsorship in 2024, Truist Financial stepped in with a seven-year commitment. The result is a reinvigorated look and feel, capped off by a one-of-a-kind trophy that had fans doing double-takes.

Fans are so pumped!

The Truist Championship’s official X account unveiled the new trophy—a sleek, cricket bat-shaped prize—in a dramatic post that simply read: “A champion’s prize. Introducing the 2025 Truist Championship at The Philadelphia Cricket Club trophy.” That’s all it took to set Golf Twitter ablaze.

“That is sickkkk 🔥,” one fan gushed, echoing the general awe at how refreshingly different the trophy design was. Golf trophies often stick to traditional cups or plates. This bold cricket bat silhouette caught people off guard, in the best way. One fan commented, “That is sickkkk 🔥,” echoing the general awe at how refreshingly different the trophy design was. Another wrote, “That is f**king awesome. It’s a blunt but enthusiastic endorsement of the way the tournament is embracing its host venue’s cricketing heritage. After all, the Philadelphia Cricket Club isn’t just a golf destination—it’s one of the oldest country clubs in America, with deep roots in both sports.

Many agreed it was a win for the PGA TOUR’s image. “No notes. 10/10,” a fan declared, summing up the community’s appreciation for creativity in presentation, especially at a time when golf is trying to grow and differentiate itself.

There were even some lighthearted takes: “Did they make Douglas Neidermeyer’s paddle into a real trophy? Thank you, sir, may I have another?” one fan joked, referencing Animal House. Another chimed in with mock concern: “Golf club technology has gone too far. Roll it back immediately!”—a nod to how realistic the bat design looked.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the cricket bat trophy a stroke of genius or a swing and miss for golf?

Of course, not all reactions were purely celebratory. “Not bad. Let’s see how long this sponsorship lasts,” said one user, skeptically eyeing Truist’s tenure. Another quipped, “Truist in Philly? Doesn’t make sense,” referring to the Charlotte-based bank’s connection to the region. Still, the buzz continued beyond golf circles.

“Hey @icelandcricket, is the best cricket trophy one that isn’t even awarded to the winners of a cricket tournament?” a fan playfully jabbed. This user noted the crossover appeal of the design. Another fan chimed in, “Actually, one of the coolest trophies, and I love that it is for Golf.”  Well, because why not?

Whether they loved the aesthetics, questioned the pairing, or just enjoyed the novelty, fans are clearly paying attention. And in a crowded sports landscape, that’s half the battle. With a $3.6 million winner’s check and 700 FedExCup points on the line, the Truist Championship is already making noise—before a single tee shot’s been hit.
