Filled With a Dark Motive, Phil Mickelson and His Wife Once Gave a Witty Gift to Tiger Woods’ Daughter

Sports have seen many great rivalries over the years. But those of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods hold a special place in the hearts of the golf community. Both American golfers are incredible players, and Phil has undoubtedly spent his career in Tiger’s shadow. But Phil came to appreciate the rivalry and even hoped their kids would continue it.

He once even sent Tiger’s daughter a ping pong table. And he claimed he was giving her a chance to compete with his children, who already had a head start on her.

In 2007, Elin Woods gave birth to her and Tiger’s first child, Sam Alexis Woods. While the whole world congratulated the couple, Phil Mickelson took it one small step further. He posted on his official website about the birth of Sam and said he hoped their rivalry continued with their kids.

Lefty said that he and Amy had seen the pictures and were very happy for Tiger and Elin. He then went on to write, “We sent them a mini ping-pong table. Our kids have had a little head start on Sam Alexis and expect them to continue the Mickelson domination over the Woods in pong.”

Lefty joked that since his kids were already much older than Sam, he felt it was only fair if he gave her a chance and stated, “We thought we should give Sam Alexis a chance to jump-start her own game.” Phil’s three children, Amanda, Sophia, and Evan, were already 8, 5, and 4 at the time. Although it was a joke, through it Mickelson acknowledged that his and Woods’ rivalry had helped him evolve, and he wanted the same for his kids.

How and when did the great rivalry begin?

Back in the late 1990s, Mickelson and Woods were playing a practice round at the Nissan Open in California. They had bet $500 on the round. Mickelson went on to win it, and the funny and humorous lefty went on to flaunt it. He made photocopies of his five winning $100 bills and slid them into Woods’ locker alongside a note that read, “Just wanted you to know Benji and his friends are very happy in their new home.”

And there began the fun-filled, entertaining rivalry between the two. Despite Phil’s magnificent skill and game, he always lagged behind Woods. His defection to LIV Golf earlier this year only widened the chasm of their rivalry. But in their prime, both legends were a great joy to watch.
