‘First Person I Saw Yesterday Morning’: Rory McIlroy Takes Another Jibe at Patrick Reed Following His First Round Heroics

It has been a whirlwind week for World No. 1, Rory McIlroy. The Brit was involved in a tee-tossing controversy with LIV defector, Patrick Reed, ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic. After much was spoken about the incident, McIlroy went through a roller-coaster ride in his first round, before culminating in a cheeky response involving Reed at the end of the day’s play.

Speaking at the press conference, McIlroy told the media how he met LIV golfer Patrick Reed, with whom he got into a spat all week. “Ironically, the first person I saw yesterday morning was Patrick Reed,” he said, before trying to play down the incident.

“Look it’s all fine. It’s been blown out of proportion. And you know, once the golf starts it’s nice so we can all just focus on the pars and birdies,” he added.

Indeed, the week has been full of controversy, which all stemmed from the brief clip that showed McIlroy ignoring Patrick Reed at the practice range. The incident also involved the latter throwing a golf tee in the former’s direction, sparking debates all over the world.

But while fans have been constant with their set of opinions, the pair of golfers have tried to downplay the incident. But every reaction has enticed further explanations, which has provided more intrigue to the story. A daily set of press conferences with pointed questions haven’t helped either, with the debate set to continue through the weekend.

Forced to complete his first round on Friday after bad light stopped play, McIlroy had a whirlwind day. He started off proceeding for the day after losing his drive but made a birdie putt in the next hole.

Overall, he finished the passage of play in 45 minutes, which culminated with a birdie, an eagle, and another birdie. It meant McIlroy finished with a score of 6-under par, which ironically put him together with Reed.
