Fitness Freak Phil Mickelson Once Publicly Condemned His Poor Eating Habits Contributing Towards a Severe Illness

Phil Mickelson had the most glorious years of his career in the 2000s. He won three major championships and four second-place finishes at the US Open. However, some of Mickelson’s peculiar eating habits came to light around that time. He lost track of his fitness and indulged himself in excessive eating, pushing himself to obesity.

Paul Azinger, the professional golfer, and TV Golf analyst was shocked. He narrated the story from the Ryder Cup in 2002. When he saw the breakfast plate, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He had a plate full of three waffles and two fried eggs. On the sides, he had a lot of butter and syrup. He was using diet coke to wash down all his food.

Due to his disturbed eating habits, the pro golfer was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis at the end of that decade. It was closely related to obesity, and he was getting out of control. However, he made significant lifestyle adjustments and gained more confidence in his game and health. But there was a faint undertone of sorrow in his voice when he talked about his health and how it affected his game.

He accepted his mistakes and said“I ended up eating poorly, I ended up drinking soda, I ended up eating sugar.” He added, “I just didn’t eat the way I should have, and I think it led to me getting psoriatic arthritis, and I think it led to me not being overall healthy.” The pro golfer said that when he looked back on his career, his only regret was that he never paid attention to his health. He was eating poorly, with no fitness regime in order. As a result, he ended up overall unhealthy.

However, the major title winner’s physique drew much attention since he declared a “hard reset” in his lifestyle before The Open in July 2019. And the change he brought in himself was marvelous. While preparing for the UK major, Mickelson fasted for six days and continued his routine. The former PGA pro kept sharing his progress on his social media handles. He said, “I feel better, I have more energy later in the round, and I’ve recovered faster, so I’m very optimistic about next year.”
