THE PLAYERS Championship suspended its second round due to darkness, with fortunately only two pros remaining to play one last hole. As a result, it has been quite easy to predict that by the time the second round gets completed, some of the prominent names will be missing from the event’s 50th edition.

The PGA Tour just hours ago announced on X that the cutline for the event had been set at 1 under, 143, meaning that there were 73 players who made the cut. Unfortunately, many big names were on the lower half too, and they will head home early from TPC’s Stadium Course.

Justin Thomas will miss his second big event cut at THE PLAYERS Championship

The fifth major has one of the strongest fields compared to other PGA Tour events. This year, the top 30 ranked players (except LIV Golf pros) in the world participated in the 50th PLAYERS Championship including world number one Scottie Scheffler. With a star-studded field, making the cut would’ve been an uphill battle that these players lost.

1. Justin Thomas: The 15-time PGA Tour winner came into THE PLAYERS Championship after making a T12 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. However, the 2021 PLAYERS Championship winner scored 1 under 71 in the opening round. And after making four bogeys with two birdies in the second round, he missed the cut by two strokes as he finished 1 over 145 at T82, making it his second missed cut of the season after the Genesis Invitational.

2. Jordan Spieth: The 30-year-old pro shot a two-over 74 in the in the opening round and tried to finish better in the second round. Despite achieving a better finish with an even-par score on Friday, Speith was not able to make the cut. The three-time major champion made six bogeys in round two with four birdies, ending his event at T92, just 2 strokes away from playing the weekend at THE PLAYERS Championship.

3. Will Zalatoris: The San Francisco native missed the cut when he started his season at the Sony Open Hawaii. However, after that, he had some incredible finishes, finishing T2 at the Genesis Invitational and T4 at the Arnold Plamer Invitational. This week, however, he was not able to replicate those performances. Zalatoris finished the second round at T114 with a 3 over 75 in round two and a 4 over 147 overall.

4. Lucas Glover: Last year, Lucas Glover won twice on the PGA Tour, taking home the Wyndham Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship. But in the 2024 season, the 44-year-old has yet to make a top-10 finish. Glover missed that cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, and now that he finished T74 at par, he will miss it again. Though the 6-time PGA Tour winner scored 3 under 69 for the second round, his 3 over 75 in the opening round pulled him below the cutline by just one stroke!

5. Keegan Bradley: The world number 13 was close to earning his 7th victory on the PGA Tour at the Sony Open in Hawaii; however, he lost in a playoff to Grayson Murray. Now, he will have to wait yet another week to grab a win, seeing as how he didn’t make the cut at TPC Sawgrass. Bradley shot a par in the opening round, however, and made several bogeys in the second round, including the triple bogey at the Island Green, where he shot two water balls. The 6-time PGA Tour winner finished T125 with a 6 over 149.

With so many big names now out of contention, one would imagine a win would be easy for the leader. That, however, is far from the case. Whyndym Clark leads the coreboard by 4 strokes, but close behind are many, like Xander Schuffle and Nick Taylor, who are just as hungry for a win. With two rounds to go, it certainly is anyone’s game!
