The show must go on is a phrase heard by almost everybody. But for a parent who has seen their infant child pass away in front of their eyes, this is the most challenging phrase. It doesn’t matter how hard they try; no parent can find it in their hearts to move on from this tragedy.

PGA Tour pro’s tale of personal suffering

This week, Camilo Villegas is participating in the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico being held at El Cordonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, a course designed by Tiger Woods. On Friday, he repeated his Thursday heroics and shot an 8-under-par 64, holding the lead by 16 under. But getting here was not an easy journey for the Korn Ferry Tour player.

In March of 2020, Maria and Camilo took their daughter to the doctor because she complained of headaches. After her diagnosis, they learned that Mia had brain and spine cancer. But regardless of chemotherapy, four months later, Mia passed away. It was the hardest time in the couple’s lives, but Camilo was encouraged by his wife to return to professional golf.

This week, after two good rounds, Villegas reflected on his performance and path to getting her. “You just focus on the process and just keep grinding.” Camilo explained that a golfer’s game feels better when they are playing well. “It’s a frustrating game,” he added. “We go through the ups and downs. It’s nice to be on a good note these first two days.”

Even though he’s seen worse times than many, Villegas has never lost hope or spirit! After the sad demise of their daughter, he and his wife devoted themselves to a greater cause. They set out on a path to help parents and families who are suffering pain similar to theirs.

Camilo Villegas and Maria Ochoa help other children with medical aid

Paying homage to their late daughter’s memories, the couple also renamed Camilo’s foundation ‘Mia’s Miracles’. The foundation that they had set up now aids children and families of Florida and Colombian residents who are facing medical issues. Amid these struggles and attempts to do good, golf has helped Camilo find a good perspective.

On Friday this week, in an interview, he said that he found the game unbelievable and that it helped him get a clear mind, hence helping others further! “To see so many people smile, so many children going through tough moments like we did, and just be able to just give a little smile, make their day, make a parent’s day,” he stated.

In December 2021, the couple welcomed their son Mateo, and little Mia lives on through his upbringing now!
