Tiger Woods’ journey to becoming the greatest of all time has not been as smooth sailing as one would assume. Despite all the hurdles, the PGA Tour legend persevered, taking home the 2019 Masters title. Having said that, various things went on behind the scenes, everything from Woods’ personal to professional life affected.

Earlier this year, HBO aired ‘Tiger’, a two-part miniseries on Woods. It featured various people from Woods’ life, sharing their opinions on the golf icon. One of these people interviewed was Steve Williams, Woods’ former caddie.

Let’s take a look at what Williams had to say about Woods, and about the time they spent working together.

Williams, who had been a part of Woods’ journey for 13 years, ended up facing the effects of what happened. The series also deals with the fact that Woods did end up pushing people away, including some of his closest friends.

As mentioned, one of those people was Williams. The caddie was fired, but not only as a caddie but also as his friend. “I thought he was firing me as a golf caddie, not firing me as a friend,” Williams said. “To this day, I find it a hard pill to swallow. Someone you spent 13 years with and gave all your time and all your effort”.

Woods and Williams were friends; the former was the best man at Williams’ wedding. The 82-time PGA Tour winner was by Woods’ side through 72 titles and 13 major wins, the two of them excelling during Woods’ career together.

“It was quite sad, really, but that was just the reality of it,” Williams added.

Why did Woods fire Williams?

This decision came after Williams ended up caddying for Adam Scott while Woods was taking a break. While Woods was alright with this decision at first, he ended up changing his mind later on. Williams did not think he would be fired, but Woods made that call, firing him as a friend as well.

“Tiger was the best man at my wedding. I didn’t think we’d have no communication for the rest of our lives. That just didn’t even enter my mind,” Williams said.

Williams did also talk about their victories in the documentary.

However, Woods stuck with his decision and ended up making his own comeback. After being away for months after his February car crash, Woods is finally looking to make his return. While the golf legend might not play the same again, fans remain excited over his return. That being said, nothing about his comeback is confirmed yet.
