Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, claimed that The Royal and Ancient Golf Club wanted to bring back The Open Championship to his course (Turnberry). However, after a recent statement by the R&A club of St. Andrew (organizer of The British Open every year), it seems that this will not be the case.

Did R&A leave Donald Trump surprised?

The Trump-owned Turnberry course in Scotland was the center of discussion. Trump’s claims seemed to indicate that the governing body would be taking the event back to the Turnberry course. However, according to the latest reports, the pro-am championship governing body, R&A, has ultimately denied the claims made by the former POTUS.

After the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, the chief executive of the body, Martin Slumbers, made explicit statements about the intentions regarding the course. He had said, “We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future.”

Turnberry is a 116-year-old Scottish course owned by Trump since 2004. It has been one of the top 10 courses used by R&A for The Open, but things have changed since the LIV supporter owned it. They hosted the last memorable event at Turnberry in 2009. Based on the recent denial and the older comments, it may not be a surprise.

What did Trump say regarding Turnberry and The Open?

Despite the clarifications given by R&A, Trump persisted in his claim of The Open Championship coming back to Turnberry. He claimed that his team had made new developments on the course, and he had received excellent reviews.

The forty-fifth President said, “I can tell you they want to come back. I think [the ongoing feud between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour] will have to be sorted out first. We did a big surgery [redesign] on Turnberry and it has gotten great reviews, even from people who hate me. They [the R&A] want the Open to go back”
