Gary Player, a.k.a. “The Black Knight,” became the third player to achieve a career Grand Slam (one of the five golfers to have ever done that). He, along with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, was the face of golf in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the original inductees into the World Golf Hall of Fame, Player is also the oldest living Masters champion in the post-World War II era. Undeniably, this has rained substantial earnings. So, let’s take a look at it all!

As of 2025, estimates place Gary Player’s net worth at $250 million, a result of his successful golf career, course design, and various business ventures. So, let’s first go through his career earnings. Throughout his professional career, Gary Player earned $7.5 million in tournament prizes. For instance, in 1961, he earned $20,000 with the Masters Tournament win. He followed it with $13,000 at the PGA Championship in 1962.

Three years later, at the 1965 U.S. Open, he made  $26,000. When the 1974 The Open Championship win rolled out for him, he made $35,439.97. His earnings peaked in 1981 with $500,000 from the Million Dollar Challenge, and he also earned $12,000 (shared) at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 1987.

Player’s salary is estimated to be around $20 million. But it’s all thanks to his golfing career and “hectic, hectic” schedule, according to him. Sitting down for an interview with Forbes Africa, he described himself as a businessman. He added, “When I die and pass away, I want people to know that I tried my best in life. And that, I am sorry for all the mistakes I made. Admittedly, we all make mistakes.” Now, at 89, Gary Player is sorted.

For instance, the legendary golfer has plenty of endorsement deals in his hands. Gary Player’s endorsements with major brands like Callaway, Coca-Cola, BMW, Sun International South Africa, and Rolex have significantly increased his net worth. He is also supported by a range of sponsors, as we saw earlier. Golf Saudi, UPS, SAP, Canon, Heineken, Johnny Walker, etc., are just more deals that reflect his enduring appeal and impact in sports and business. This, in turn, has helped him earn $2 to $4 million annually. Recently, he was named a Brand Ambassador and Member of Vista, the world’s first global private aviation group. So, what else does Player do to boost his career earnings?

Gary Player looks at other areas for income

“A full life is a gift. A career in golf is a privilege. Having my story told is a humbling honor,” says Gary Player. Growing up in the apartheid-era South Africa, the golfer has made significant business venture investments. This includes Gary Player International, Gary Player Designs, Black Knight Management, and Black Knight Foundations, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit beyond golf. He actively engages in the golf course design industry through The Player Design Firm. The firm has completed over 400 projects in more than 41 countries, establishing Player’s reputation as a leading designer in the field. Additionally, in 2019, Gary Player announced his sponsorship and investment deal with OnCore Golf. So, the 118-time international winner is good at the golf business.

In addition to his business pursuits, Player has made numerous appearances in movies, documentaries, and television shows. Then, he has authored books on golf, philosophy, fitness, and other topics. He has also demonstrated a philanthropic spirit by raising millions of dollars for charitable causes. These efforts include The Player Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Invitational. These have raised over $64 million for educational initiatives and children in need. Additionally, having won the South African Open 13 times, Player has actively integrated golf courses into his local communities.

Interestingly, in 2006, The Sunshine Tour, Coca-Cola, and Gary Player signed a landmark three-year agreement to establish a new limited-field event. It aimed to provide a competitive platform for the top 30 professionals at the end of the Sunshine Tour’s Winter Swing. This collaboration followed a three-year partnership with the Nelson Mandela Invitational. Consequently, that resulted in the creation of the Coca-Cola Charity Championship, with the beverage brand as the title sponsor and Gary Player as the host.

Recognizing his exceptional accomplishments, President Donald Trump awarded Gary Player the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2021. One cannot help but give a nod to Player’s illustrious career. Additionally, Gary Player is active at Augusta National. Nicknamed the “International Ambassador of Golf” for playing in over 165 countries (more than any other golfer in history), we are likely to see more of the legendary golfer this week. Cheers to that!
