Brooks Koepka has just become the only LIV Golf player with four titles on the breakaway circuit! The man bagged another $4 million and recovered from the issues that had weighed him down. But now all seems to have worked well. And the way Koepka has been playing, one would believe that he loves golf to the core.

However, the five-time major champion understood that the sport might be a little unamusing at times. In a recent episode of Sundae Conversation With Caleb Pressley that aired 3 weeks ago, Koepka had a hilarious tête-à-tête about golf, his wife, Jena Sims, and all things sarcasm. During this, the host asked the LIV star if he thought golf would be more fun to watch if it were football. Koepka smiled and hesitantly said, “Yeah, we’ll say that.” 

Pressley, in his unique way, continued to say golf might not be fun because it is, and the 34-year-old completed his sentence and said, “A little boring.” Did the golfer who has won more than 20 times as a pro just confess that golf was boring? Yes, but it was all said for entertainment. The host questioned if the sport not being as loud as others was the reason people didn’t watch golf or if the fans just disliked LIV. Koepka hysterically laughed at the posed question and clarified, “Put a both.”

Though it was a fun segment, just meant to be hilarious, which it was. But in recent days, the golf’s broadcasting numbers have been a nightmare. The viewership of the events, especially the PGA Tour events, has fallen tremendously. It could be attributed to the division of the world’s best players into two leagues. But now it turns out that it is not just the PGA Tour or LIV Golf; even when the best of its golfers came together, things did not work out extremely well.

The 88th Masters’ failure

At first, when the PGA Tour rating dropped by 20% overall in the 2024 season, many, including Rory McIlroy, attributed it to the massive division in golf. So, it was predicted and hoped that at the men’s first major, when the golfers from both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf would play together, the viewership would skyrocket.

However, at the 88th Masters, the fewest fans tuned in to watch the major. Notably, only 9.589 million people watched the final round. This was a steep 20% drop from 2023 when Jon Rahm defeated Brooks Koepka, and 12.09 million watched it. This year’s rating was the worst Masters TV rating since 2021.

Moreover, if the two COVID-19 years, 2020 and 2021, are not counted, then the 88th Masters had the lowest viewership since 1993. So whether it’s because golf might come off as boring to some or because people are fatigued by the everyday drama, things need to change sooner for the golf scene.
