After two long years and many doubts surrounding J.T. Poston, he finally won on the PGA Tour! The 31-year-old pro competed in the BMW Championship, and after failing to qualify for East Lake, he took a two-month hiatus. During these two months, Poston spent ample time with his family, especially his 6-month-old daughter, Katherine Scott Poston, and took a break from golf.

Was the shift from winless to champion in Sin City due to the time he spent with his family? After winning the $1.26 million payout, Poston was asked in a press conference if the change in his game was the result of a new perspective he gained after becoming a father. The 3-time PGA Tour winner excitedly said, “Absolutely” and added, “I think at times I was definitely guilty of taking it a little too seriously maybe or being a little too hard on myself.”

However, since his daughter’s birth, Poston explained that he did a 180 and realized, “that golf is not the most important thing. It’s honestly far from it.” The new relationship in his life gave him the freedom to prevent golf from controlling his emotions. Regardless of how he plays, Poston knows he can always be a father, and hug his daughter, and for her, the results don’t matter.

As he expressed, “that’s a huge win in my book” emphasizing that poor form or a million-dollar victory doesn’t change his daughter or their love for each other. Haven’t we heard this before? How should golf not take precedence over a golfer’s entire life, despite major victories? Poston is certainly echoing the same belief as the current world no. 1 golfer.

Just like J.T. Poston, Scottie Scheffler also prioritizes his family

This year, many golfers became first-time parents, including Scottie Scheffler. As he was emerging as one of the top players in the golf world, his family was also growing, with the birth of his son, Bennett Scheffler, in early May. Even before Bennett’s birth, world no. 1 had his priorities straight, and golf was notched down from his life.

After winning his second green jacket at Augusta National, Scheffler expressed that after the birth of his child, golf would become his fourth priority. In an appearance on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, he revealed how fatherhood changed his perspective, much like it did for J.T. Poston. Although it hasn’t happened often in the 2024 season, the 2-time major winner explained that after tough days, when he becomes too critical of himself, he thinks, “‘If this was Bennett what would I tell him after the day?’ Part of that has been really helpful.”

And if he performs poorly at any event, even though his parents and wife tell him it doesn’t matter, it’s his son who works the real magic. He added, “When you get home and you see Bennett and he just sees you walk through the door and he’s like ‘hey man, what’s up?’ you truly do just forget about everything else. It’s pretty amazing.” For new fathers Poston and Scheffler, their children have taught them not to take golf as seriously as they once did. While having fun, both have won on and off the course!
