Fans know Brooks Koepka for his steely nerves and stone-cold demeanor. With his emotionless, almost surgical attitude on the greens, he can sometimes be intense. Golf Magazine journalist Claire Rogers believes Koepka is rather personable and laid back.

Joining the Favorite Chamblee podcast with Brandel Chamblee and Bailey Chamblee, the three talked about golf, the future of the PGA Tour, and sponsor exemptions. But probably the juiciest conversation was when Brandel Chamblee asked Rogers about her favorite interviews on The Scoop. Rogers pointed out a few names. But Koepka’s name launched an entire story.

Initially, she revealed, “Brooks is someone that I was like, Is he scary? Am I going to be intimidated by him?” But her interactions with him challenged that perspective.

“I loved Wyndham Clark really opened up about his mental health, and I’m always really thankful when someone’s willing to kind of go there… And then I thought Brooks was awesome,” Claire Rogers said on the podcast.

Rogers shared how the LIV golfer isn’t as serious as the media outlets reveal. In fact, right before the interview, when Rogers emailed his agent as to what ice cream he wanted, they didn’t provide a generic response. His request was thought out: Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream.

Yes, we found the order a bit weird, too, until Rogers explained: “It’s after the band or something… He knows his ice cream. This is like in kind of into-the-weeds ice cream flavor.” Apparently, Koepka knows what he wants and is not afraid to indulge at times.

Further, when Rogers asked which golfer Koepka would want to play with for the rest of his life, the LIV golfer gave a genuine, introspective answer to the fun hypothetical. He revealed that he’d choose Rory McIlroy since he was Koepka’s biggest competitor, keeping him driven. This portrays Koepka’s thoughtful, open nature and mutual respect for his competitors.

“He’s so laid back and so much fun. It makes a big difference when someone’s like into the idea, right? Like, engaged with the interview and everything, and he really was, so that was great, really,” Rogers shared with the Chamblees.

Turns out Brooks Koepka isn’t as intimidating as he looks, right? So why does he keep his emotional guard up while competing? Well, he actually has a good reason for it.

A recounting of the Masters 2019 reflects that. Fans found Koepka intensely staring down Tiger Woods while both were still in contention. That intimidating look can come off as outright closed and emotionless. Quite the contrary, Koepka argues that while he looks calm, his mind is constantly reading other players’ reactions, absorbing crowd chatter, and staying locked in mentally. That’s how he stays in his element.

And that guarded look? So his competitors cannot read his emotions. “It’s part of why I don’t show emotion,” Koepka revealed. “It gives the other guy an advantage.”

As it appears, Brooks Koepka values a strategic persona while keeping his life detached from his on-course image.

Brooks Koepka’s complex personality

It’s not just Claire Rogers who highlights Koepka’s fun-loving personality, which stands in stark contrast with his GQ profile. Dan Riley, a GQ author, spent several days with the golfer in Jupiter, Florida, joining him at his home, on the golf course, and at a local bar. That’s where he found out about Koepka’s nuanced character.

Riley found out that Koepka loves to train and is famously known for his intense workouts and his football-adjacent build. However, outside of sports, his lifestyle and personality are surprisingly loose and fun.

“There was not this sort of precious sense of maintaining the temple of his body as hard as he works out and everything. There’s definitely a looseness there. It’s fun hearing stories about his life down there and going out on the boat,” Riley wrote.

His friends also shared how he isn’t the kind to take himself too seriously. He enjoys fishing, boating, and hanging with friends. Moreover, the 35-year-old also loves spending time with his two-year-old son, Crew. In fact, when his wife Jena Sims took up the role as a judge in Miss Teen USA, Koepka took up family responsibilities.

The golfer also frequently interacts with his fans, whether that’s through his profile or his wife’s. While playing for a practice round, Koepka took to Jena Sims’ Q&A to answer some nagging fan questions. One fan asked his opinion on wearing a hoodie on-course. To this, he replied, “I  don’t see any issue with it. Why is everyone complaining?”

Koepka also answered several other questions on his preferences and life, showcasing his open, fun-loving nature. As a matter of fact, the LIV golfer dressed up as a rocket on Halloween, while he celebrated the launch of a brand new design in his Nike shoe line. Isn’t it nice when people believe a celebrity to be an intimidating personality, but they turn out to be the chillest person ever?
