It feels like déjà vu for Patrick Cantlay. Patrick Cantlay is once again facing criticism, this time for being “boring” on the course. Known for his calm, measured style, the golfer’s lack of energy has long been a point of contention—but recently, it’s reached new heights. Fans have been quick to voice their frustration, particularly on X, where one user called him a “buzz kill” after he blocked JT from throwing the hammer on the final putt in TGL. The moment, which many were eagerly anticipating, fell flat when Cantlay’s hesitation left fans questioning what went wrong.

But well, just like the previous time, Billy Horschel has him covered this time, too. During the presser ahead of the Genesis Invitational, he mentioned how the fans wished to see a different side of the players—the goofy side rather than the serious one.

He said, “They want to see the side that when we’re home with our buddies playing golf you know what we are doing, how we are acting and what are we saying to them.” Billy Horschel turned pro and started playing on the Tour in 2010. On the other hand, Cantlay started playing in 2013. There might not be a huge gap, yet Patrick Cantlay has failed to feel as comfortable.

“I’m very comfortable in that setting you know not everyone’s like that but you know we can help those players in the sense of sort of bringing them along. JT and I can bring Patrick along. some other guys can bring other players along that may not be natural-born entertainers,” he added. He even adds how both JT and Horschel know Cantlay, and guarantees that he is not as boring off the course. They are together in the Atlanta Drive GC and played the match on January 22 together for the first time.

“He’s got a funny side too. him he’s pretty humorous and you know JT and I are just trying to pull that out of him a little bit when we’re playing tgl matches,” said Billy HorschelBut well, we know how deeply slowplay has been affecting, and a Golf Channel reporter only begged to differ with Horschel’s saving. She mocked him and said, “There’s been some trash talk in there somewhere with Patrick Cantlay, Billy. Another big talking point at the moment.”

Well, Patrick Cantlay has indeed been in the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons. Remember the 2023 Masters?

Patrick Cantlay booed for slow play at the 2023 Masters

At the 2023 Masters, champion Jon Rahm and runner-up Brooks Koepka endured a grueling final day, and it wasn’t just because of the rain delays that stretched the schedule to 30 holes on Sunday. Their final round dragged on for almost five hours, and they found themselves waiting at nearly every tee. Much of the blame was directed at the group ahead—led by American Patrick Cantlay, known for his famously slow pace of play.

After finishing tied second with a final-round 75, Koepka didn’t hold back when asked about the pace, bluntly stating, “That group in front of us was brutally slow. Jon went to the bathroom like seven times during the round and we were still waiting.” Cantlay’s methodical approach to lining up shots has long been a point of contention, and once again, fans took to social media to voice their frustration over the delay.
