The popularity of the PGA Tour seems to be consistently dropping. Ever since the battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf began, both sides have received a lot of criticism from the golf community. PGA Tour loyalists have often targeted players who have made the switch to LIV Golf; calling them traitors. Those who follow LIV Golf have also been critical of the old and washed-up concept of the PGA Tour.

This has forced the PGA Tour to take some drastic steps to improve the quality of its events. This season, the Tour shifted back to calendar seasons to make it easy for the fans to follow the schedule. This year again, the new field size policy suggested to the PGA Tour can see major changes by 2026. However, their attempt to improve the pace of play to satisfy the pros and fans seems to have backfired.

As the PGA Tour is crumbling under the pressure, LIV Golf is seen to be constantly growing. It has seen a lot of support over the past year. Many pros have left the PGA Tour due to dire circumstances and moved over to LIV Golf. This has also drawn in more fans for the league.

The fruits of their efforts can be clearly seen in a tweet posted by @MyGolfSpy. The post stated that the PGA Tour’s viewership has dropped by 3% while LIV Golf is experiencing a 50% increase of the same on YouTube. The numbers might raise some alarms at Jay Monahan & co.’s office in the PGA Tour Headquarters.

Red alert for the PGA Tour

LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman must have been overjoyed as the PGA Tour’s owner spoke up against the American-based league. 2024 DP World Tour Champion Rory McIlroy questioned the stability of the Tour back in April 2024. McIlroy said that the TV ratings of the PGA Tour were plummeting by “20 percent across the board!” And this was weeks before the prestigious Masters Tournament.

McIlroy also shared how the viewership of the Valspar Championship 2024 had also dropped drastically by 27% as compared to the 2023 edition of the event. If things carry on this way then it won’t be long before LIV Golf catches up to the PGA Tour in terms of viewership. All LIV Golf needs is a reliable broadcast partner to turn the tables on their adversaries.
