Greg Norman knew he would have quite a few enemies when he decided to head LIV Golf. But little did he know that his decision would also cost him an invitation to the majors, especially, the Open Championship, an event he has won twice. Sadly for Norman, his worst possible nightmare has turned into reality.

All he got for being a two-time victor in the event was an option to buy a resale ticket, just like non-winners, and a lot of disappointment. This is not the first time the two-time major winner has been “snubbed.” The 2024 Masters held earlier this month also treated its former runner-up with a similar kind of ignorance. Instead of being a part of the Masters’ complimentary guest list, Norman has to go through secondary channels to obtain a ticket for entry into ANGC.

Talking about the matter, Mike Woodcock, director of corporate communications for the R&A, said, “I don’t think there’s a G. Norman (on the list)… I think they would have let me know if there was. So I’m not aware that he’s bought a ticket so far. Obviously, there are tickets still available on the resale platform or in hospitality. He’s very welcome to look there,” indirectly hinting at the absence of any invitation extended to the 2x Open winner.

This has left the golf world with sympathy for an aching Norman. Despite many of the fans’s disagreements with the 69-year-old’s ways, they were mostly united against the dismissal of his achievements by the R&A. So what did the fans exactly have to say?

Voicing their disagreement with the R&A, some fans sided with Norman on this particular matter. The fans compared Norman and Woodcock and took a slight jab at the latter. Agreed that Norman has not moved to the rival league, but he once was a very celebrated golfer who won 90 times professionally on various Tours. The netizen even remarked, “Every golf fan has heard of Norman, but who’s Mike Woodcock (pause)?”

Highlighting the disrespect delivered towards the Australian golf veteran, a netizen went as far as to criticize the larger golf world’s ode for class. Norman won the championship twice in his tenure in 1986, and 1993. Owing to his victories, as per larger belief, Norman should have received the invitation. The fan wrote, “So freaking disrespectful, Who is this clown? You can hate Norman, but the guy won the event twice. Insane, they talk and walk class but are classless.”

Calling out the decision of the Open Championship not to extend an invite to Norman, a fan even said, “Absolutely Petty @TheOpen.” Such was the general agreement among disheartened fans grieving for the apparent loss of the recognition of the once shining faces of the game of golf.

It was not just supporters of the Australian entrepreneur who felt that the decision was not in the best of spirits. Some of the people who dislike LIV Golf also agreed that the treatment endowed upon the ex-open champion was unjust. A Twitter user wrote, “I’m not a LIV fan at all, but that said, as an ex-open champion, surely he gets an invite automatically.”
