The American professional golfer Hal Sutton is in big trouble! After his post about the 2022 PLAYERS Championship winner Cameron Smith went viral, he had no choice but to post another tweet to clarify himself.

As the winner of the Players Championship, Smith has got the opportunity to get his name engraved on one of the lockers in the locker room. And it so happened that the Australian golfer’s name is engraved on the same locker as the 2000 winner Hal Sutton.

Sutton posted the picture of Smith standing next to the locker on which his and Sutton’s names are engraved. “Hey Cameron, you’ll need one more to match your locker mate,” Sutton captioned the post. “The next time you get to 18 with a three-shot lead, leave the driver in the bag. Less drama and easier on you.”

The American golfer had won the PLAYERS twice, first in 1983 and the second in 2000. Sutton indicated that Smith would need one more win to match his locker mate’s achievement. Some fans didn’t like that Sutton compared his two victories with Smith’s one. They also responded negatively to the American golfer’s criticism of Smith’s choice of the golf club.

Due to his bold shot with the driver, Smith had lost his three-shot lead from the second place as the ball ended up in the water; He won the tournament with a one-shot lead over Anirban Lahiri.

Most from the golf world thought that Sutton had no right to say all this, and criticized him.

As the comments grew more negative than positive, Sutton felt the need to clarifying himself to the golf world.

Sutton cleared up the face that his intention was not to degrade the young Australian golfer through his second tweet. “He’ll continue to see the locker and I won’t,” Sutton wrote. Sutton also explained himself why he criticized Smith for choosing the wrong club. “I was just trying to help young golfers make a high percentage decision when leading by several strokes,” the 63-year-old golfer wrote.
