One of the oldest sporting events, the Open Championship boasts its rich heritage every year with its amazing coastal link golf course. And this year it has taken place in one of the oldest English seaside clubs, the Royal Liverpool Club course, which was founded in 1869, also referred to as Hoylake. Besides this, 1897 was the first year it took place in Hoylake.

The grandeur of this iconic place extends beyond comprehension and now before the final round of the Open Championship, a PGA head professional and the loyalist of the Liverpool Club made a heart-churning confession in his final year of service at Hoylake, which took the golf world to its awe.

The head professional’s take on the iconic Liverpool course

Being one of the long-lasting members of the Liverpool club John Heggarty, who invested around four decades of his life in the game, considers this to be a wonderful opportunity to serve his golfing tenure in this magnificent ground of honor. This master professional said that he was humbled by the opportunity to come here and serve for the Royal Liverpool. And in his last year of service, Heggarty flashed his heart out in an interview claiming the golf club to be the soul in the tradition of golf history. 

In that interview, Heggarty said about the glory of the stage, “Royal Liverpool golf club has been my life almost nearly four decades. It is a wonderful golf club. It is steeped in the tradition of the game. Its members are wonderful that spread across so many different continents and ultimately it’s a family here. It’s just fantastic as a club professional here to be able to welcome…To have the Open Championship is an incredible honor, not just for me but for the club itself.”

He further said it is the responsibility of him and others as PGA members, to bring more people into the game and in order to get people interested they have taken initiatives like the PGA Play, which helps new players to interact with pros for guidance and the PGA Swingzone which can bring youngsters into golf.

In addition to this, it is an 18-hole demanding layout that stretches between Hoylake and West Kirby, which is the neighboring town, to the South West.

At the age of 28, Bobby Jones won the 1930 Open Championship at Hoylake which added to his Grand Slam feat, after his three other wins in the same year-US Open, US Amateur, and British Amateur.

In 2006, the 11th Open Championship was won by none other than Tiger Woods and it was his last win of that major. Then in 2014, Rory McIlroy had a splendid win over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler.
