Back in April 2019, Bryson DeChambeau revealed he had never made a hole-in-one, ever. This was after the first round at the 2019 Masters Tournament, where he led with a score of 6-under par at 66.

Having gone close at the 3-par 16th hole (Redbud), DeChambeau said, “The whole time it was rolling. I’ve never had an ace, ever, unfortunately. I was really hoping it would go in.” Little did he know back then that his words would be a blessing in disguise, and would eventually break the “ace-curse”.

Bryson DeChambeau finally scores an ace in the final round

While the 8-time PGA Tour winner wasn’t able to cement his lead in the subsequent two rounds, he still made the cut for the final day of the tournament. And while that didn’t start well either, he recovered with birdies at the 12th (Golden Bell) and the 15th (Firethorn). What followed at the 16th was a first-ever ace for DeChambeau, who was overcome with emotions and hugged everyone near his range.

It helped cap off a T29 finish for DeChambeau, a rank he wouldn’t be so proud of. Yet, he scored his first hole-in-one in the tournament, a monkey off the back.

The 16th course at the Augusta National is one of the easiest of the par-threes, with 21 aces scored at the hole, and 9 since 2010. But that takes nothing away from DeChambeau’s ace, and he would hope that his first ace is a sign of more to come.

Apart from DeChambeau, former World no.1, Justin Thomas, also secured an ace in the tournament. Hole-in-one used to be a rare sight as only 14 aces were recorded in the competition from 1934 to 2000. Since then, there have been 19 aces, with the 2014 and the 2016 editions witnessing the most (three each). Interestingly, no player has shot multiple aces in the history of the tournament.

The 15-time Major winner won his fifth Green Jacket in the 2019 edition; it was also his first Championship win after 11 years. Due to the high profile of Woods and his much-publicized injuries and personal issues, the tournament was keenly watched and garnered numerous views, in what was considered one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.
