Rory McIlroy (L) and Phil Mickelson
Rory McIlroy doesn’t mince words. He has been vocal about his support for the PGA Tour and its players, and equally unabashed for any receiving criticism. He displayed it yet again, this time against the words of 6-time Major Championship winner, Phil Mickelson.

Rory McIlroy disagrees with Phil Mickelson’s comments
In the press conference before the commencement of the CJ Cup, McIlroy reacted to Mickelson’s comments about the upward trend in the LIV Golf Series. “I certainly don’t see the PGA Tour trending downward at all,” he said.
The reaction was a response to the LIV golfer’s belief in the rebel league’s trajectory. “I see LIV Golf trending upwards, I see the PGA Tour trending downwards,” Mickelson had said. “I love the side that I’m on. And I love how I feel. I love how I’m reinvigorated and excited to play golf and compete. I love the experience. I love the way they treat us.”
Additionally, McIlroy left no stone unturned to disregard Mickelson’s comments. “I don’t think anyone who takes a logical view of the game of golf can agree with what he said,” McIlroy argued.

However, the biggest head-turner was the vague statistic provided by the Northern Irishman in the same press conference. “Ninety-five percent of the talent is here,” he claimed. The number doesn’t resonate with the total players accounted for, nor the Major Championship victors on both ends of the Tour.
Golf world reacts to McIlroy’s statements
The 33-year-old’s remarks drew a mixed reaction from the fans. While staunch PGA supporters enjoyed the drill and cheered for McIlroy, a few others were skeptical and listed the factors that were directed toward the LIV Golf Series.
Rory McIlroy on Phil Mickelson's comments last week:
"I certainly don’t see the PGA Tour trending downward at all. 95% of the talent is here."
"I don’t think anyone who takes a logical view of the game of golf can agree with what he said.”

Here is a selection of those tweets.
95% of the talent is not there haha. DJ, Cam, and a healthy Brooks are still top 10 players. Niemann right on the cusp of that. Bryson has shown in the past he can be right there as well. Just simply not true. Most PGAT events have leaderboards filled with no-name golfers.

ironic for RM to say "I don't think anyone who takes a logical view of the game of golf…"
Has he not heard himself speak over the last few months? 🤣

95% of what, the top 200 in the world? . . . Half of the recent major winners, all whom have won majors since Rory's last, are with @LIVGolfInv @PGATOUR @GolfChannel

Did he just make up that statistic?
— Matthew (@Garmith80_6) October 19, 2022
Well if it started with 100% of the talent and is now 95% wouldn't that be considered trending down? In all fairness, I watch both because I love good golf.

Love it & let the Majors be the battlegrounds

All in all, the reactions seemed to judge the duo’s comments from a perspective of a LIV Golf vs the PGA Tour angle. The two associations are locked in a court battle and hardly seem to get on with each other, let alone function smoothly.
However, McIlroy’s comments are not expected to be swept down the carpet. A rebuke is predicted from Mickelson’s end in the subsequent LIV event, which can lead to a barrage of words from both camps. Follow for more related updates.
