Nobody in the right mind will ever think that Charles Barkley and Phil Mickelson didn’t know each other before Mickelson’s wife (then girlfriend) introduced them. However, when the former basketball player told the story himself, we must believe it.

The NBA legend Barkley and Mickelson played golf together at ‘The Match 3: Champions of Change.’ They played against another power pair, the NBA star Stephen Curry and former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. Match 3 was a charity event to fund a golf or a sports journalism program.

It is not the first time the celebrity sports entities played golf together. However, the event became more memorable because of the story of how Barkley and Mickelson met each other.

When Phil Mickelson was just “my boyfriend Phil”

On the evening of Match 3, Mickelson posted a video on his Twitter of Barkley sharing the story of how he and Phil met each other. As an introduction, Mickelson explained how Barkley has a special story about their meeting that he wants to share with the fans.

Barkley explained that Amy, Mickelson’s wife, used to be the cheerleader for NBA games. And she was good friends with him. However, he didn’t know she was dating Mickelson at the moment. Barkley continued that Amy would always ask him to play golf with her “boyfriend Phil.” 

He adds that he was busy and couldn’t take the time out. However, after Amey insisted the third time, he asked for more details about her boyfriend. Amy then revealed to him who it was. And once he knew about it, Barkley was in shock. He said, “I said to her, in the future, you tell my boyfriend, Phil Mickelson. I thought you were going out with “Phil,” the bartender.” 

Barkley further added that if he knew “boyfriend Phil” was actually Mickelson, he would have canceled everything to play golf with him. The legends concluded the video by saying they would the Match and would win all the money.
