Yesterday Matt Fitzpatrick recorded another victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with three strokes and 19-under par. This was his 9th win in the European Tour and his first win of this year. But besides Fitzpatrick, the other players are very unhappy, and not just because of the result.

Water logging at all three courses of Alfred Dunhill creates a conundrum

Sunday was the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship but due to water filling the courses, the authorities were forced to postpone it to Monday. On Monday early morning, an inspection of the grounds was held and was declared to be in playing condition. But water was still flowing around and Carnoustie was in the worst condition.

As a result, 37 of DP World Tour players walked out before the final round of the tournament. One of them was six-time DP World Tour winner Joost Luiten. Criticizing the severe condition in which the game was commenced he said “The Dunhill Links was a complete shambles… I will go as far as to say it was probably one of the most unfair tournaments I have ever played.”

He continued “If the course [Carnoustie] is in conditions such as this then I don’t think it’s fair to have a competitive round on it, especially not if you play the two other courses that are completely different and play like normal. After his withdrawal, he went to focus on the Acciona Open de España this week.

The remaining golfers at Carnoustie started playing at 11.30 a.m. And the competition at St Andrews and Kingsbarns began at 9.30 am. However, the competing players shared somewhat different views.

Many players left to prepare for the upcoming Spanish national golf event

Oliver Wilson who finished T25 yesterday said “It was an impossible position to please everyone due to three courses and not everyone playing the same.” According to him, the Tour was trying to come up with a solution that would be acceptable to all and would finish the game.

The runner-up Matt Southgate sympathized with the players who opted out stating that with the upcoming Spain event the Alfred became a look week.

Southgate said “You kind of feel for the guys and wish them all the best to get off safely to Madrid and get their prep done for this week.” It was indeed a rather disappointing match for many players.
