Right after winning the Wells Fargo Championship, Rory McIlroy filed for a separation in a Florida court. After being married to Erica Stoll for seven years, the couple decided to part ways. The divorce papers read that the marriage of the two was ‘irretrievably broken’. Given the circumstances of McIlroy and Stoll’s divorce, the question about Stoll’s alimony has been floating around. The world No. 2 is a millionaire with an insurmountable wealth. But did you know they had signed a prenuptial agreement?

With a presumed net worth of $200 million, the 26-time PGA Tour may have to give much in the divorce alimony. However, it might not be the case, as Erica Stoll and McIlroy had signed a prenup one month before their extravagant wedding at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017. And per the divorce agreements, as Daily Mail reported, both parties have agreed to follow the clauses of the prenuptial agreement.

Concerning his assets, apart from his hometown house in Holywood, Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy has more houses in America. McIlroy had bought a home for $11.2 million, with Serena Williams and Micheal Jordan as his neighbors. The Northern Irishman now resides in a $10 million pad in the Sunshine State. Where in the garage parks his cherished possessions, the Ferrari F12, which he bought from Ian Poulter, the BMW i8, and a Range Rover worth over $90,000.

Other than this, McIlroy earns approximately $40 million from his sponsorship deals with Nike, Omega, TaylorMade, Optum, and Workday. The 35-year-old also has earned a total of $86,696,279 just from his golf winnings and finishes, making him the third highest paid on the PGA Tour after Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. And so, the alimony might be equally given to Stoll and may follow a different method. The full agreement between the two has been sealed.

In 2012, McIlroy met Erica when she was working for the PGA America. She had helped him get a police escort to the course after misreading his tee time at the Ryder Cup. Eventually, they became friends and got married in 2017. In 2020, the couple were blessed with a daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy. Now that they have filed for a divorce, Erica and McIlroy will have shared custody of their daughter.

A statement was issued by McIlroy’s manager, which mentioned, “Rory McIlroy’s communication team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible.” It must also be noted that when McIlroy lifted the Wells Fargo Championship Trophy, he was wearing his wedding ring, but in Tuesday’s practice session for the US PGA, he was not wearing it.

The divorce would be finalized soon and amidst the drama surrounding McIlroy’s life, he would be playing at the PGA Championship. But this would not be the first time that the 35-year-old played the PGA Championship after a broken relationship.

In 2014, Rory McIlroy was engaged to Danish tennis pro, Caroline Wozniacki. The two were ready to tie the knot in May of the same year, but McIlroy called it off over a phone call. He then explained, “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”

Coincidentally, that breakup was before the 2014 PGA Championship too. And then, McIlroy didn’t withdraw from the event and played his best golf to win the fourth and the last major he has ever won.
