The world of golf is well aware of how great of a golfer Phil Mickelson is, but only a few fans are familiar with the compassionate side of Lefty towards his family. Over the years, there have been many instances when Mickelson has kept his family before his professional career. Throwback to 2012, when the golfer was mentally occupied with family issues that led to him missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.


In the Humana Challenge, which marked the commencement of the 2012 PGA Tour season, Phil tied at the 49th position. Back home in San Diego, his second daughter Sophia had fainted and suffered a seizure in school.

She spent nearly four days in the Children’s hospital. Mickelson’s participation in the upcoming Farmers Insurance Open was uncertain. But his wife, Amy Mickelson insisted that she had the situation handled, and motivated Lefty to carry on with his Tour. But how did the 6-time Major winner perform at Torrey Pines?

Previously, Mickelson has faced many health scares in his family. His wife, Amy, recovered from cancer in 2009, while Phil’s mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year. However, his daughter’s recurring health issues were also disturbing the golfer while competing at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Phil Mickelson had a poor first-round scoring 5-over 77 in the South Course of Torrey Pines. However, he did recuperate from a poor start after scoring 4-under 68 in the second round. But that wasn’t enough for Lefty to make it to the third round, as the event marked Mickelson missing the cut for the third time in his professional career at Torrey Pines, and his first time in a decade.

Fortunately for him, Amy was there in attendance at the North Course to support her husband. She said, “It’s been a rough week. But you get through it. She’s been a trouper. She’s held up pretty well.” Amy further added that her daughter was feeling much better and had even returned to school. She then talked about Phil Mickelson’s mindset leading up to the event.

When Phil is working, he had to focus on hitting shots,” Amy said. “That kind of the way I’ve looked at our last few years. I’ve seen it as a positive (distraction) for him. But does he worry? Yes”. Phil hadn’t mentioned his daughter’s seizure ahead of the event. However, after the second round, Phil did share his thoughts.

The 6 time Major winner said, “I don’t feel bad about my game. I really don’t. I just have to take it from the practice tee to the course, and that’s easier said than done sometimes.” Nonetheless, Phil went on to win the AT&T Pebble Peach National Pro-Am tournament nearly a month later. Because basically, that’s how Hall of Famers bounce back to their winning ways!
