Veteran writer gives his take on PGA Tour’s stance over the rollback rule

The “rollback” policy, which was put forward by the USGA earlier this year, focuses on the problem of increasing distance in professional golf. So in order to solve this, this policy proposes to implement rules that would limit how far the golf ball can be hit, and this is especially true for elite male players with high clubhead speeds. This proposition was made with the intention of limiting the distances achieved by these golfers, which are actually increasing day after day.

Under this policy, the tournaments require their elite male players to use a golf ball that is tested under modified launch conditions, thereby limiting its speed and reach. But the PGA Tour commissioner showed his harsh censure of this policy and launched a memo that stands against the same. This memo says that it doesn’t support this modified rule and that the players wouldn’t have their golf balls tested.

Amid this ongoing controversy, veteran sports writer Rex Hoggard, shed some light in an interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, shared on its Instagram page. Hoggard said, “I don’t see Jay Monahan and the tour changing their mind on this.” Referring to his knowledge about this latest debate and that he has learned from his sources that the Tour members are quite rigid with their decisions.

Golf’s new battle: Tradition vs Innovation

This issue in the golf universe is quite complex and multifaceted. On one hand the technical advancements in golf have brought about the highest peaks of success for golfers, but again, it also had long-lasting effects on golf courses, sustainability, and the essence of the sport. Thus, it is important to have a proper balance between scientific advancements and tradition.
