Joining LIV Golf has affected the stardom of Phil Mickelson. However, that wasn’t the case before the coming up of the Saudi Arabia-backed league. Before entering LIV Golf, Mickelson was one of the most loved players on the tour. Apart from his impressive golfing performance, he was also known for his strong views about golf. Views, that largely seemed appealing to the majority of the golfing world. However, it was the year 2006 that saw a slight backfire on an opinion of Phil Mickelson.

Over the past few months, Mickelson has been in light for his feud with the current PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan. However, that wasn’t the case back in 2006. In 2006, Mickelson came out in support of certain steps taken by then PGA Tour commissioner, Tim Finchem. However, little did he know that his support would spark a major controversy in the golfing world.
Phil Mickelson extends support to Tim Finchem
During an interview with a media house, he said, “I don’t think players should be involved in the Tour,”Mickelson proposed. “I don’t think we should have any say. I think the commissioner should run the Tour just like he did, and I’m going to support it.”
Considering the aura of Mickelson, it goes without saying that his words took no time to spread around the golfing world and open the doors of backlash and criticism.

Going to the roots, his words came in support of then PGA Tour Commissioner, Tim Finchem’s announcement of changes in the tour. Set to be enforced from 2007, the changes hoped to bring the biggest names in golf like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to play more tournaments. It also aimed at ending the golf season two months early to provide golfers with a relaxing space.

The announcement by the PGA tour received a welcoming reception from the entire golf world. Contended by the announcement, the golf world also came out in public, appreciating Finchem for such changes. However, along with appreciating Finchem for the decisions, it also made sure to call out Mickelson for his words. The result? A major controversy.
