John Daly can’t exactly remember when it was. But there was a time in the early 2000s or late ’90s—he can’t pinpoint it—when the two-time Major winner was soused. He was also teeing off with Tiger Woods while being soused. Nonetheless, he walked all over him. That was also an early morning tee-off after a night of drunken revelry, where Daly sang ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ and “got a standing ovation.” “It was fun,” the 57-year-old says decades later.

The 1995 Open Champion was notorious for his fast-lane lifestyle, which was and is rather uncommon in a sport that prides itself on solemnity. In the game of tuxedos and polo tees, the native came with a coke and cigar in hand. With his eldest son, John Daly II, the five-time PGA Tour winner will tee off at the PNC Championship, where they will once again face off against Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods. Ahead of the much-hyped tourney, the veteran golfer shares a wacky story of beating Woods while drunk.

Tucker Carlson invited John Daly for a candid chat. Carlson asked about the time when he beat Tiger Woods while having a hangover. Wrong. “I was still drunk, actually,” the veteran golfer corrects the host, taking a trip down memory lane. “That was a funny story.”

The two were teeing off at a small event when Daly invited Woods for a drink after the first round. But Mr.T thought it’d be better to “hit some balls.” Daly asked again, two hours later. But the 19-year-old kid went over to the gym this time. “This is going on for about five or six hours, and we’re still there, just pounding, getting drunk having a good time.

The next day, during an early morning tee-off, Daly asked his caddie to bring a Crown Royal or Jack Daniels with coke. A tanked Daly went head-to-head with Woods. “(To) make a long story short, I shoot like 65. Tiger shot like 71. He just shook his head the whole day,” Daly says with a very Daly-esque chuckle.

He doesn’t exactly remember when and where. Although, in retrospect, he thinks it’s Sherwood, 1994, when Tiger Woods was still an amateur. But it was a small event with only 12–15 pros. The two have faced each other many times since their heyday. In the twilight of their careers, the Ritz Carlton Golf Course has become the stomping ground for the two.

The 2023 PNC Championship starts on December 14. After two days of Pro-Am, twenty teams will joust for $200,000 on Saturday and Sunday. Team Woods netted a 9th-place finish last year. Whereas, the Dalys were marching towards their consecutive victory before the eventual winners, Vijay Singh and Qass Singh, cut it short.
