Every father worries about their kids, and Jack Nicklaus was no exception. Despite being busy playing golf tournaments, he has always been there for his kids. Thankfully he had his wife’s support to take care of the children. However, the legendary golfer never stopped being a father. He tried his best to learn about the new generation his kids were growing up in whenever he could. And in 2000, he talked to Bob Verdi, a Golf Digest writer, and narrated the story of when he did something unexpected.

As a concerned father, Nicklaus understood that times have changed. His parents probably weren’t as optimistic about the world he was growing up in as they did about the one they experienced as children. During his childhood, he practiced air raid drills in class due to the possibility of nuclear war. None of that is available to anyone any longer. However, does he prefer the crime and drug culture of today? They must take security precautions in our culture today. Therefore, he once explained his own experience with drugs.

Why did Jack Nicklaus try drugs?

Nicklaus’s wife, Barbara, told Verdi that the legendary golfer was very contemporary with his kids. It intrigued curiosity, and he asked about the level of contemporary he was with his kids. To his surprise, Nicklaus told the story of when he first tried marijuana to understand what it tasted like. He wanted to know about the generation of his kids growing up. He was out at dinner with his friend when he first tried it.

His friend asked him for permission to smoke, which he allowed. But then, after clarification, he understood it was smoking pot. Narrating the story, Nicklaus said“He asked me if it was OK to smoke. I said, “Of course.” He said, “No, Jack, you don’t understand.” However, his friend did not mean cigarettes but marijuana. “So he did, and I asked him to have a puff to see what it tasted like.” Verdi was again curious if Nicklaus had tried the marijuana. The legendary golfer tried it, but the reason was the highlight. He said, “I wanted to know about marijuana. I’ve got kids. I would guess they’ve tried it. I would be amazed if they haven’t.”

Nicklaus only tried it because he wanted to know about its effects. He was a father and wanted to be aware of what was happening in that generation. However, the legendary golfer never tried drugs before or after that. He was so unaware that he could not even recognize cocaine if it ever appeared in front of him. He told Verdi, “I never tried marijuana again, and I wouldn’t know what cocaine looked like if you brought it into this room right now.” Therefore, it is safe to say that without crossing her boundaries, the 18 times major championship winner did his best to understand the surroundings and raise his kids right.
