‘I’ll Try to Channel My Inner Seve’: Jon Rahm Makes a Powerful Promise After Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup Message

As the hype surrounding The 2023 Open Championship comes to a close, the attention of the golf world now turns to the fast-approaching Ryder Cup. Excitement is high as the two teams prepare to battle it out at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. While the event is all set to take place from September 29 to October 1, the golfers have already started preparing both mentally and physically for the biennial tournament, and Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are on that list too!

Rahm and McIlroy were able to place themselves in the top 10 during the Open Championship. Despite trying to add another major to their name, we can’t deny the fact that they put up an impressive performance. However, now, just like the rest of the golf world, their focus turns to the Ryder Cup. Both have made some strong statements about the international event, with Rahm making a bold promise to “channel” his inner beast.

In a recent interview shortly after the 2023 Open Championship, the Spanish golfer opened up about his plans regarding the upcoming Ryder Cup. Revealing a positive mindset, Rahm went on to mention how he will be looking for his second win at the tournament. Following captain Luke Donald‘s lead and agreeing with Rory, the golfer is confident that the European team will come out strong.

When asked about whether he hopes to play a major part in the upcoming tournament, he responded by saying that he would do everything he could and give his maximum effort at the event to try and win it and take the cup back home. “I’ll try to channel my inner Seve and do what I can do,” he stated, referring to his Spanish idol and golf legend Seve Ballesteros.

In the 2018 Ryder Cup, the European team consisting of ‘Rors’ and ‘Rahmbo won the tournament after the cup had been in American possession for two years. But in the subsequent tournament two years later at Whistling Straits, the International side lost the cup to the U.S. Team. The win has not been forgotten by any of the players, especially not Rory McIlroy, who has made it his mission to try and find redemption for it this year.

McIlroy draws on their previous defeat for motivation

Just hours before Rahm’s bold promise, Rory McIlroy had his own words of motivation about the event. In an interview talking about the international event,he mentioned that he fancied taking the Ryder Cup back home, especially since he was in such great form of late. Moreover,the golfer claimed that the 2021 loss served as motivation for him.

“After what happened at Whistling Straits, I don’t think we couldn’t be more motivated to go to Rome and get that Ryder Cup back,” he stated. Despite not being able to lift the Claret Jug, the Irishman clearly now has his sights fixed on the upcoming event against Team USA. Moreover, he claims that his major title drought has been extended to a decade now, and he insists that it is the last thing on his mind!
