Rory McIlroy, since his 2014 major championship wins, has failed to capture that first berth in the majors. The Northern Irishman has come close to attaining these titles many times but has failed to cross the finish line. The most recent example of this was the 2023 US Open. After showcasing a dominant performance at LACC, the 4-time major winner couldn’t convert his execution into a victory. He had to settle for second place on the leaderboard, a shot behind Wyndham Clark.

Undoubtedly, his efforts have been present on the field, but they haven’t been able to provide the golfer with the edge required to win a major. However, as the golfer took the mic on Wednesday, before the $9 million Scottish Open, it appeared that his mindset wasn’t impacted much because of all these finishes. In fact, the 34-year-old had nothing but a refreshing outlook to share!

As the PGA Tour pro prepares to take on the Renaissance, reporters have some resolute questions ready for the golfer. These queries highlighted the Open Championship next week. The interviewer asked McIlroy to provide insight regarding his top eight finishes in six of the last seven majors and how close he thinks he is to getting over the finishing line at Hoylake.

The professional golfer honestly replied, “Yeah, I’m as close as I’ve ever been, really.” Despite his crossbar moments at St. Andrew’s last year and the LACC this year, McIlroy believed there had been consistency in his performance. This factor seemed to really please the golfer, and it was highlighted in his bold statement that followed. “You know, all of that stuff, even though I’m not getting the wins, it’s going to stand by me for whenever I get myself in position again,” he stated, filled with the belief that his losses were constantly pushing him closer to a win!

McIlroy strongly feels that when he once again finds himself in a similar position, rather than discouraging him, these close finishes are going to support him in eventually winning a tournament. It’s quite clear that the 2014 PGA Championship winner is certainly not disheartened by his current form. In fact, he’s glad for it!

McIlroy enunciates his happiness about his current golf form

Fans and the public weren’t the only ones to assume that the North Irish golfer might have been devastated by his recent close-call losses; the press was too. During the pre-tournament press conference, a reporter questioned McIlroy, asking him if his recent near-misses had left any mental scars on him. However, much to everyone’s surprise, the PGA Tour star was far from torn by his recent form.

The 34-year-old began his answer with an “I don’t think so.” He claimed that it was a good thing that he participated in the Travelers Championship right after the US Open. In the tournament where he picked up his first PGA Tour ace in 233 starts, he did not allow himself the room to dwell upon anything. The golfer’s idea was to “get right back in the saddle and go all over again.
