But like many player-caddie relationships, things between Tiger Woods and caddie Steve Williams did not end well. Not even Steve could see this coming. After 12 years of their partnership and massive wins in Tiger’s career, it all came to an end. Despite their amazing relationship, Woods decided to fire Williams in 2011.

The player-caddie relationship between Tiger Woods and Steve Williams started in 1999 and came to an end in 2011. Woods announced the end of their relationship on his website in 2011, leaving Williams stunned. According to an article by ESPN, Woods wrote on his website, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change.” He further wrote, “Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.”

Despite Their 13-Year Long Relationship Steve Williams Once Made ‘I Was His Slave’ Comments About Tiger Woods’ Bizarre Behaviour Towards the Former Caddie

The whole incident came as a shock to the whole golf fraternity, but more so to Steve himself. In a statement on his website, he wrote, “Needless to say, this came as a shock.” In an interview with The Associated Press, Williams said, “A player has the right to fire a caddie at any given time. And for a player when he’s not playing at his best for extended period of time, it’s not uncommon to change caddies, coaches, psychologists or bring on a psychologist. We all know the business. I have no problem being fired. But I’m disappointed in the timing of it.

The duo had won 72 times worldwide and had 13 majors in their bag. Post-revelation, Woods thanked Williams for all his help. Although the whole situation dawned upon their fans, he had known it for two weeks prior to the announcement and kept quiet out of respect for Scott.

Tiger Woods and Steve Williams: A Stale Friendship

More than a player-caddie relationship, they shared a friendship, but despite that, Williams went months without hearing anything from him after the scandal. Their wives were really close friends, so it became awkward between them. Post-scandal, the difference in their relationships was evident on the course. Williams had predicted that their relationship was sinking and becoming stale.

After Woods’ car crash on Thanksgiving night, that revealed his serial adultery, leading to a massive scandal and his divorce. Their relationship began to show signs of strain. Despite his disappointment with Tiger’s decision, Williams said that Woods is a great player, and he wishes him all the best in the future. Williams also said that he has no problem being fired and that he understands the business. The true reason for their split is still unknown and must be anticipated by both parties. Steve is currently working with Adam Scott.
