‘I’m Not One of Those Guys That’s Going to Lie…’: John Daly Once Said ‘I Don’t Have Many Skeletons in My Closet,’ as the Reason Behind His Surging Popularity

Over the years, a debate that has taken rise is about which players develop the biggest fan following. While many sports have called the elite players the most loved ones, that isn’t the case with golf. Even though elite players like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have a massive fan following, not left far behind is John Daly. Despite not being one of the greatest golfers statistically, Daly enjoys being one of the most prominent names in the golf world.

Scrolling through his career, one can simply define it as a roller coaster ride. Apart from the goods, the ‘bad boy’ of golf has also been a part of some major downfalls due to some of his actions in the past. John Daly opens up about the reason behind his fan following

Walking down memory lane, the year 2017 was a pleasant one for the two-time major champion. After a strenuous effort, he finally won the PGA Tour Champions’ Insperity Invitation. His first win since the 2014 Beko Classic. Two months after his win, in July 2018, he indulged in a conversation with a media house. During the conversation, he threw light on the reason behind his massive fan following.

John Daly is known for his strong and bold opinions. Something, that is clearly visible in his words. That time was no different. Expressing himself about the reason behind his fan following, he said, “I think because I don’t have many skeletons in my closet.”

As mentioned earlier, despite all the downfalls, Daly has maintained a truthful relationship with his fans. Elaborating on it, he asserted, “I’m a guy that always told them when I screw up. I screw up and I admit and I go on. I don’t hide anything. There’s just nothing to hide with me.”

Ever since turning pro in 1987, Daly became of numerous controversies. Even though the majority of these controversies revolved around his personal life, they in some way or the other affected his professional career as well. However, with his strong personality in place, Daly made to rise over the downfalls to come out with a refined personality. Something, that according to Daly, had a major contribution from his fans as well.

Going further in the conversation, he said, “I’m not one of those guys that’s going to lie to anybody about what’s going on in my life. I think it takes the pressure off of not having to look back or anything.”
