The golfing gene seems to run in the Woods bloodline. Tiger isn’t the only one in his family to feel fondly toward the sport. Charlie, his son, is an avid golfer who competes in junior leagues. Tiger also has a niece who plays on the LPGA Tour, Cheyenne Woods. She developed an interest in golf at a young age. Woods also has a strong resolve to help in the progression of women’s golf and once said that the LPGA now needed an African-American winner and was going to do it.

Woods’ inspiration isn’t what everyone would think. Despite Tiger’s numerous accomplishments serving as motivation for Cheyenne, her main inspiration was her grandfather, Earl Woods. “He was really the one who got me excited about the game, guided me through my junior career,” she said. Tiger too shared a similar respect for his father, who always edged his game forward. He said, “My dad has always had a big belief in my abilities and so have I.” It is safe to say that the Earl served as a great encouragement to the next generation of Woods.

In 2012, at the age of 21, she began her professional golf career. The same year, she won her first professional race on the SunCoast Ladies Series in Daytona Beach. She beat the runner-up by four strokes to take home the win.

Since turning pro, Woods has three victories. In 2015, she played well at the qualifying tournament and earned herself an LPGA Tour card. She has since become a regular on the LPGA Tour but has yet to win an event.

Cheyenne Woods aims to win on the LPGA Tour

Woods is quite outspoken about the progression and equality in golf. She admitted that there had been a lot more exposure to the sport than when she was younger. Back in 2018, she said, “I think, the different programs of making golf accessible and have people introduced to it a little bit more has had a huge influence.”

Cheyenne believes that the next step is for an African-American to win the Tour. She believes this will happen. She said, “But, looking forward, there definitely will be [an African-American LPGA winner], whether it’s me or Mariah Stackhouse.”

Woods stated that she would be content even if the victory did not come from her first attempt. She would be just as excited if Mariah or one of the other African-Americans on the tour won it. She said, “It’s funny, we all know each other, we’re all super close and we’re all cheering each other on so it’s great to have that support.”
