Hideki Matsuyama, the Japanese golfer, has taken the PGA Tour by storm with his excellent recent performances. However, despite being in the limelight, the 29-year-old likes to keep a tight lid on his personal life. And he does a very good job at it, as even after his emergence in global golf, we weren’t aware of his marriage.

After some scattered wins from 2014 to 2016, his game developed consistency, and he notched four wins within two years. Subsequently, a four-year dry spell ensued. However, in 2021 he came storming back, dazzling us all with his glorious Masters win, becoming the first from Japan to win the prestigious title. Matsuyama is a man of few words. Earlier, he has opened up about talking in front of the media, calling it ‘difficult’ and ‘stressful’. Moreover, when Golf Digest wanted to get their hands on all the information available about him, they got a brief insight through Eiko Oizumi, writer for Golf Today Japan. She said, “He’s really, really shy. He doesn’t want to show his private life,” adding that the Japanese media, too, tries not to pry too much lest they make him uncomfortable.

In August 2017, after he finished T-5 at the PGA Championship, Matsuyama suddenly revealed to the world that he had recently become a father. Least to say, we were all startled, because never before had there been the mention of a relationship, let alone a wife.

Then, when questioned, Matsuyama said, “No one really asked me if I was married, so I didn’t have to answer that question. But I felt that after the PGA would be a good time, because our baby is born and I thought that would be a good time to let everyone know.” He admitted he had married in January 2017, and shortly after, their baby was born in July. On multiple occasions, thereafter, he has mentioned his family.

While not much is known about his wife, his PGA tour profile states that his wife’s name is Mei, and their daughter is called Kanna. Adding to the secrecy, Matsuyama’s caddie for the 2016 Hero World Challenge was a woman named Mei Unui.

Although they might be the same person, the two sharing the same name could simply be a co-incidence. At the time, the golfer praised her, saying she was ‘giving me good vibes’.
