Is J.T Poston Playing in the Players Championship?

The FedEx Cup playoffs are moving forward at a fast pace, with the second round of the BMW Championship already in progress. Whether they will make it into the top 30 at the end of this tournament will currently keep many players’ minds occupied.

This is especially true even more so for players who actually stand a chance to turn things around and squeeze their way into the top 30 list. For example, someone like J.T. Poston stands a good chance to enter the top 30 after the BMW Championship gets over, but it is not a certainty. Let’s analyze if the odds are in his favor and also consider his chances of playing in the Players Championship while we are at it.

Where does J.T Poston stand currently?

As per the current stats, Poston ranks 43rd in the FedEx Cup leaderboard with 1037 FedEx Cup points. His projected points for the BMW Championship is 180 as per the leaderboard. Thereby, his projected total after the tournament is about 1217, with a projected rank of 38. This means as per official projections, Poston would not make it to the top 30.

However, life is unpredictable. It is possible that if he defeats all odds against him and gains many more points in the BMW Championship than projected, he could enter the top 30. It is not impossible.

The contenders holding projected ranks of 25 to 30, all have a projected total of close to 1600. In case one of them scores a little less than the projected points, and Poston piles up over 500 points, he would make it.

In order to gain around 500 points in the BMW Championship, he would have to win the title. At the least, he would need to finish in the top 3, or top 5. Should he manage to do that, he would enter the final playoff.

Now, we move on to his odds at playing the Players’ Championship. The tournament is usually called the fifth major. It has a list of criteria to allow 144 players to play in the tournament. Let’s check if Poston makes the cut.

Poston’s odds of playing ‘The Players’

To play ‘The Players’, one needs to fulfill at least one of the fourteen criteria mentioned in the list. The list includes winners of certain tournaments, past winners, and several other lists based on a multitude of factors.

One of these lists is the list of the top 125 players from the FedEx Cup Rankings of the previous season. Last year, Poston finished within the top 30 and hence qualifies for the Players this year.
